General feedback required
« on: August 29, 2002, 10:08:00 PM »
I turn 40 (a young 40 I must add) in Feb 2003 and have decided that I do not want to wait till I retire to enjoy my life. So I am considering moving to Spain from the UK sometime in the summer of 2003. I cannot speak Spanish but I start lessons in October this year. In an ideal world I would like to move to an area that is inexpensive to live and find a casual job just to get me by (I currently work as a Graphic Designer). I have just sold my house and will be getting divorced this year (no kids) so I have no ties holding me back. So really I just need some general feedback from anyone who has experienced this kind of move or if you know of anyone who has successfully moved to Spain and is enjoying life without the stresses of a demanding job. I have only ever been to the Ballerics and the Canaries and I seem to fit in well in the tourist areas as someone who has lived there all there life. But I am open to suggestions to where the best place to live would be as I will be visiting Spain again in January for 2 weeks to check any suggestions out. I may be just a dreamer asking for too much but I am prepared to give it a go (you don\'t know what\'s round the corner till you look!) I look forward to your responses.

Muchas gracias

hey Paul,

Welcome to the Cafe! There are a few others on this board in your similar situation. It wouldn\'t hurt to peruse the boards and reply to others\' messages. As far as living goes, it depends on exactly what your interested in. The south of Spain has a HUGE British community (if you didn\'t already know). SOme people may feel more comfortable around their own countrymen. Others like to isolate themselves, in which case you could go to the interior of Spain like somewhere in La Mancha or up near the Pyrennes.

I preferrably, like the south. That\'s the romantic, moorish Spain, and with or without the huge tourist population, it\'s still the best place for me. Try something a little less touristy: Granada, Malaga, Cadiz...

And as far as work is concerned, you do have EU nationality. Work on your Spanish and try to get a job in graphic design for a british company in the south  [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif\"] [addsig]

Hi Paul,

I seem to be in your shoes, exactly, except for the divorce part.

I turn 40 in Feb too!  This may very well be a midlife crisis thing, but who cares?!

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck finding a happy situation in Spain.  It sounds encouraging, from the sound of the good people of this forum.

Thanks for your feedback Tracy, I will go through the messages as you suggest and see what other people are saying. As for the location, I would prefer to stick to the coast but I reckon it would be a bit more expensive to live. And as you quite rightly point out I am of EU nationality so finding work shouldn\'t be much of a problem.

LOL, Mermaid, midlife crisis, what midlife crisis!!! LOL - I think you are right about that, the problem is with me is that I am getting old before I am ready for it, because I am still young inside and I don\'t look my age (so I\'ve been told!!). I even still go clubbing wth my mates!! So I thought before I go downhill I thought I would move to Spain and enjoy it - anyway life begins at 40 doesn\'t it?

Thanks again for your replies and if anyone else has any feedback it would be more than welcome.

Muchas gracias
