Hey Ceallaigh,
A support network is a great idea...but...I consider the Expatriate Cafe to BE that suppport network [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] In fact, if I were you, I\'d read the boards here closely. There are a few others heading to Spain around that time. Maybe you can post a reply to their messages.
Good luck![addsig]

Hey C,
I\'m planning on moving out to Spain around that time. Although I will already be in Europe. I\'m leaving the States end of March to do some traveling first and visit old friends etc. I lived in Prague, Czech Republic for six months (just got back this April) this time I figured I\'d head to warmer climates! Plus, I speak more Spanish than I do Czech [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif\"] ....anyway we should chat.....
later,

Hello -
I\'m aiming for a fall move to Barcelona as well. I\'m graduating with a BA in Spanish Literature this spring, but I want to get a certificate in Teaching English. I\'m not sure if I should do it here in New York or in Barcelona. I don\'t think I could teach without having any kind of background in English, though! I\'d be too nervous!
If you want to go through the process together, I would be thrilled to get the help and not be alone! My e-mail is [!-- BBcode auto-mailto start --][a href=\"mailto:hannahmel@yahoo.com\"]

Hi Melinda,
I\'ll be heading to Spain at about the same time as you. I\'ll be travelling all over Spain initially before settling down in the one place.
I can share with you how I\'m going about gaining a teaching qualification and experience. Everyone is different but this is how I\'m doing it.
I\'m doing the online TEFL course recommended by Tracy, as teaching is not something I want to do long term. A few years is ok but not for the next 20!!! The course is great and so far so good.
To gain teaching experience, I am currently undergoing an accredited training course on weekends with a charity organisation in my hometown of Sydney, which seeks volunteers to teach English to immigrants. The course is paid by the charity organisation (a bonus!), and will give me a taste and experience for teaching English. I will start teaching my first student in the next week or two. Experience is the key in Spain so I\'m told! Like you, I have tertiary qualifications but not in teaching, so for me this is one avenue I\'m employing to better my skills and make myself that little bit more employable when I arrive in Spain. Perhaps there is an organisation in your hometown offering the same services, and you will not only be doing something worthwhile for your community but yourself as well.
This is how I am preparing for my move to Spain so far. I have other ideas and plans I\'ll be engaging in before I leave as well. I\'m serious about my move to Spain and I plan on making it a successful move. Where there\'s a will there\'s a way!
Cheers,
Lily

Hello dudes and dudettes!
I am planning, well hoping to be in Spain around the same time. I am applying for an MBA in Madrid which will start next November. I may not be in the same boat as you all looking for jobs and what not, but because my gf lives in Madrid I have looked extensively at options. So maybe I can help!!

Hey Lily,
You\'re offering us some great info!!! I take it you\'re from Australia? WELCOME! Please keep us informed regarding the TEFL training online. Many people want to know about it and need to hear your opinion!
Also, for any Yankees wanting to follow in the footsteps of Lily, there does exist the equivalent of the charity organization she\'s talking about, where you can be trained to teach ESL AND be given actual experience teaching. It\'s called Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA) look for the chapter closest to you in your state! Their website is [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.literacyvolunteers.org/home/index.htm\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]Literacyvolunteers.org[/A][!-- BBCode End --]

I\'ve actually written to a similar volunteer program in my city (New York) and it\'s been two days and I still haven\'t received a response. I\'m going to give them another two or three before trying to contact them again. I\'m searching for other similar options, but so far have come up with nothing. I\'m still in college, my senior year, so with everything that\'s going on, it\'s a problem to try and take an online course while I\'m doing a full course load now as well as working on all my days off. I would do it for a volunteer program, but I don\'t think I could handle volunteering AND getting a certificate of any kind at the same time. I guess I am very lucky to have some good friends over there, though, who will probably be able to help me when the time comes. One of them wants to come here for 4 months to work so I\'m helping her find work... Hopefully she\'ll be able to assist me in the same way if I decide to go to Madrid! I\'d prefer Barcelona, but whatever I can get to be in Spain, I\'ll take!

Tracy, thanks a bunch for your information on the volunteer center. I am moving to Madrid this december and I was hoping to find an organization where I can volunteer teaching english. By the way, your site ROCKS, I don\'t know what I would have done without this site. I have planned all my trip based on information from this site. Keep up the great work!!!
Mike,
The MBA program that you are taking, is it associated to any of the grad schools here? Can you complete the whole program in Spain? Can you get financial aid? I am in the same situation as you are. I will really appreciate your reply. Good Luck to anyone and remember," where there is will there is a way." Believe in your dreams, work hard with determination and discipline and the most important never ever give up!! God bless you and help you. Florecita,
The MBA program I am talking about is a full fledged MBA degree from an Biz. School. There are three business schools which are high ranked and located in spain. ESADE, IESE, AND IE. The first two are in Barcelona and the latter is in Madrid. [addsig]

As they are independent institutions, they all provide financial aid (if qualifiable) and provide housing or housing assistance. I do not know if they corroborate with other graduate schools in Spain for cross-disciplinary field studies. And yes you complete your entire MBA in Spain.[addsig]

Hey MIke,
Thanks a bunch. This is another option in case I decided to go for my MBA instead of making a career teaching english. I really like teaching, and teaching english is a great option. In case that time get rough, and I cannot get a job down there, I will apply to business School. Good luck to you too. We are in the same boat. My boyfriend is from Madrid as well. Hey Lily
I\'m heading to Spain about the same time. I went to ITC to get certified to teach English it was a great experience. They not only had us teaching classes, (two each week) they offer lifetime job assistance. I have some web-site recommendations in case you or anyone else is interested....

Hi Tracy,
Yes, I\'m from Australia. Long way away!
The online TEFL course is great, so thank you for your recommendation. The modules are easily explained, and the feedback I receive from the tutor marking my assignments is terrific. She tells me whether I am on the right track, where I can improve, and offers suggestions in addition to mine. I\'ve even come up with ideas she had not thought of! So I guess the learning is beneficial to both the learner and the tutor.
I\'m doing the course at a slow pace as I\'m not moving to Spain till March. I can do it at my own pace and time without the pressure of having to have assignments submitted by a specific date. Personally, this works great for me as I work very long hours as well as doing the volunteering course and teaching I mentioned, as well as arranging plans and ideas for my move to Spain, and trying to maintain some sort of social life in the process. I don\'t have a problem self-motivating myself to do the course, so for me doing it online is perfect.
I also received a 25% discount on the price of the course. I\'m not sure if this was a one-off or if the will be other offers later on. I did the sampler course when I first heard about the course but did not sign up for it, and received an e-mail a few weeks later advising that if I signed up before 4 October a 25% discount would be applicable. For others interested in doing the course it may be worth looking into, especially if you are trying to save money for Spain like I am. Any savings is better than none, and better that money in my pocket than in someone else\'s!

Thanks for the web site recommendations. I haven\'t had a chance to check them out yet but I\'m sure they\'ll be helpful.
Where in Spain will you be heading out to?
I\'m hoping to eventually end up in Seville but anywhere I can find a job will do. [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"]

Hey Lily,
I had some friends that tried to get work in Seville and had no luck whatsoever. Just letting you know so you know what you\'re up against. It\'s dificult for Americans to get work because of the whole EU national thing. The red tape is so think that schools won\'t hire you full time as they would then be required to sponsor you for getting your work permit, resident visa, etc. I\'m planning on going to Barcelona and I\'m going with quite a bank roll so that I won\'t be hurting for cash. ITC (the school I went to for certification) has a school in Barcelona, plus I\'m a sun and water girl and I want to be on the coast too. [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] I\'m not trying to discourage you, I\'m just passing along what I\'ve found out through friends who\'ve been there. Be prepared to work for as many as six diferent schools as a "freelance" teacher....that\'s how schools/institutions get around the legal labor part....anyway, I\'d be happy to keep in touch and pass along any useful information I get. [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] You can also check out [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.daveseslcafe.com\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]Dave\'s ESL Cafe[/A][!-- BBCode End --] which is a great sight for teachers. There is a job center and it\'s also a great resource for ideas and such. There are also several books on the subject that can offer some advice [!-- BBCode Start --]
Teaching English Abroad: Talk Your Way Around the World!
[!-- BBCode End --] is a pretty decent book, it gives you the low-down on teaching all over the world. Hope this helps.

Hey Michelle,
Thanks for the great advise. I\'m not discouraged at all. If anything, I am more determined to go! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] All the research I have done supports what you have told me, so I am prepared for a hard struggle. Looking forward to it in fact!
Coming from Australia, I will have the same problems as your friends without an EU passport. My aim is to stay in Spain for as long as I can, preferably legally, but if I must stay illegally, I am prepared to take the risk (as much as I hate the thought of having to resort to that!). Did your friends stay in Spain illegally?
I guess the one advantage I will have in Spain is that I speak Spanish fluently (I\'m from Argentina but grew up in Australia). It will certainly make looking and applying for jobs that little bit easier! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"]
I\'d be happy to keep in touch too, and will pass on any useful information I get as well.
Hasta pronto,

Greetings everyone,
It seems that it\'s been some time since people have posted in this forum. I just joined so I\'m looking forward to offering, and receiving, helpful advice. I\'m also looking to move to spain with my fiance next fall. We\'ve started the job search but it seems too early -- at least that is what people are saying. We\'re planning a trip in a few weeks to scope things out. My fiance has a master\'s degree in Applied Linguistics and will be TESOL certified. I have a master\'s in International Education with experience in program development and management. I\'m looking for something connected to cultural exchange programs and/ study abroad. I know positions in this field are hard to come by --- I\'ve been looking for many years. So, if anyone has any suggestions where to look I would really appreciate it. I\'m feeling a bit overwhelmed and not really sure where to go -- there doesn\'t seem to be an organized web site for positions in study abroad centers for Spain.
Thanks for any suggestions and I look forward to talking with everyone!

I would like to return to Spain in the fall of 2003 as I haven\'t been back for five and a half years; it is time. I recently graduated from the University of Hawaii-Manoa with two bachelor degrees in English and in Spanish. Since then, I have joined the working force as a painter and needless to say, it is not my first choice. If you have ever been to the Big Island, you may have noticed that there are not a whole lot of well-paying jobs that require education. And the ones there are, well, they are taken. I\'m not complaining though.
I am deferring graduate school for a year and looking to adventure around the world following my heart and feeding my mind and spririt.
Is it possible to obtain a teaching position before departure? It sounds like a one in a million, but it could be done, no? That way, a work permit visa could be sitting in the carry-on bag rather than a regular tourist (90 day) visa.
I just joined the cafe after being an attentive fan for months. This site is fantastic and I love the story behind the two people that made it all possible.
Aloha,

hi michelle,
thanks for your input! i take it you did the course in prague? was it easy to find work there? i was thinking of doing the course in madrid, learning spanish, seeing what the work situation was and if it did not pan out, then move to prague and see how i do there. any helpful suggestions? and what did you think of itc? it comes very highly recommended.

Hey Jana,
Feliz Navidad! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_xmasrudolph.gif\"] Yes I took the course in Prague and it was very easy to get a job there. The demand for teachers in Praha is so high that you literally get to choose which school you want to work for. I think going to ITC and getting certified was a very valuable experience. And if you want to hear more about it, you can email me at [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"mailto:mlwalton13@hotmail.com\"]
mlwalton13@hotmail.com
[/A][!-- BBCode End --]. I\'ll be going to the Barcelona location for that life-time job assistance when I move there in September [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif\"] Spain, as well as most of the EU is a tad more difficult because of the beurocracy and especially Spain because their unemployment rate is so high. But don\'t let that put you off [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] . I\'m going with $5k in my pocket so that I can live for a few months whilst trying to get steady work. From everything that I\'ve read on this board and others you have to be prepared and realistic. Having lived in Prague for six months I feel I have a much better grip on the whole situation, (i.e. moving, finding a place to live, what to sell/ship/or give away, etc.) We should keep in touch. It looks like we\'re heading to Spain around the same time.
I\'ll be in Europe come April 1st, but I\'m traveling around a bit before I head to BCN. Drop me a line... [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"]

Hi there!
A friend and I are moving there in March from the UK to learn spanish, but we will be looking for work right away...
are there any decent websites or companies we can look at/contact for jobs??
I have just quit my sales/marketing job in the city (London!) to fulfill my dream of working and living abroad.... The job market is bad everywhere in the world, so i imagine it will be hard in Spain to get work.... But this is a top priority of mine, as i dont wanna bum around and waste my life away....
pleasde can u email me on [!-- BBcode auto-mailto start --][a href=\"mailto:raakeshparmar@hotmail.com\"]

I\'ll be in Madrid around September/October (with luck) to do some graduate work. I may be teaching freelance to pay some bills, so I\'ll be in the same boat as many of you. I already have the TESOL certificate and some experience working at summer schools in Europre and volunteering at home in the States (thanks to Literacy Volunteers of America), but this will be my first serious attempt at finding some sort of work in Spain. So I\'ll be around at that time of the year![addsig]

A friend and I are also planning a move to Spain around Fall 2003. We are both planning to do a CELTA or some kind of similar certification and then try to find jobs. In response to an earlier posting on this board, I also have found that it\'s difficult to begin looking for work this early -- about 9 months ahead of when we intend to be there. Can anyone who has a little more experience offer an idea of when it actually makes sense to seriously start looking for work for the timeframe of Fall \'03.
Don\'t worry, I am well aware of how difficult it is to find employment ahead of time, especially in Spain where the market is so tight, but I do intend to try anyway!! Everyone\'s advice will be appreciated.
Tracy, in reply to your earlier comment, this web site does indeed seem to be the best thing we could possibly find to help us figure out how to make (or even consider) life as an expat in Spain. I am extremely pleased with it. You are all so helpful and friendly and the information is widespread. It\'s a fantastic site.
Cheers to everyone, and have a great New Year!
Ben

Jana-
Hola!! I am also thinking about taking the ITC course in either Barcelona or Madrid this summer. Did you end up finding out any additional info about the program? What dates are you thinking about? We should chat (you know there is a discount if you sign up with someone)
I am currently a Spanish teacher in NJ and do in class ESL support. Desesperadamente looking to get back to Spain.
email me and we\'ll chat..

I, too, am looking to head to spain sometime this summer/fall to do a certification course and look for work. Is anybody else checking out TEFL International\'s option of getting certified around April/June and then going on to work for two months in a summer camp teaching english? It seems like a great idea!

Hey Laura,
The camp idea sounds great, but I unfortunately cannot take the ITC course until the summer since I am currently teaching in the US. Wish I could be of more help.
Suerte..

i am so excited because i think my plans are firming up! ok so i am leaning towards probably taking the ITC training course in Barcelona May26-June20 and then heading straight down to the southern coast to work for two months at this summer camp through TECS which you can check out at [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.tecs.es\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.tecs.es[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --] (what a find!). So I\'m wondering if anybody else wants to do the ITC course at the same time/place so I can try to get the "double-up" discount (each person gets $150 off if you enroll together). Let me know!!

Hello
Please be gentle with me as I am a newcomer to this site.
Two English musicians moving to Barcelona in Sept. 03 and looking to make friends in a city where they know no one!!
Especially welcome but not essential, are other musicians/ennes. Is everyone on this site a teacher?! Am I not allowed as I am not?!
Also interested in hearing from people who perhaps have not sorted their accomodation..

I am not a teacher here in Barcelona. Not that I wouldn\'t mind teaching for the extra money, but nothing has panned out as of yet. I am an American singer living here in Barcelona. When you guys get here, maybe we can hook up. What genres are you into? [addsig]

Hi everyone,
Fantastic site!! I just found it today and it\'s actually answered most of my questions, but if anyone could clear up any of the following, that would be appreciated:
- As an EU National (English) I assume I won\'t need any visas/documentation whatsoever to work in Spain. Is this correct? Can I stay as long as I want? (sorry all you yanks, i\'m not teasing! Any Brits out there by the way??)
- Does anyone know anything about teaching english in GRANADA specifically?? Is it as good a place as any, or should I stick to Madrid, Barca etc?
- I\'m not going to have that much cash for a nice place, so is student accomodation a possibility in Spain? Can non-students somehow get a house with uni students? Is it cheaper? Should I just stay in a \'pension\'?
Any advice on this would be great. Also, if anyone wants to get in touch who\'s going out to Spain in August/September 2003 please feel free, I won\'t know anyone out there otherwise!!
Cheers,
Alex

Hi i will be out there around that time too, and i will be looking for cheap accomodation somewhere too. I am hoping to go out to Barcelona in Septemebr time, after studying for a while in San Sebastian. I would be glad to meet up with any people who are going to be there around that time and are in a similar situation! i will not be alone (my gf is there in Barca), but i will of course wanting to get to know as many people as possible, as it is a whole new start for myself also. Of course i dont mind what nationality you are, but can anyone tell me if there are any irish communitities out there?! I would like to know if there is anyone there like myself. Anyway anyone from the UK or the world would do ! I look forward to hearing from any of you soon,
Andy[addsig]

[/BLOCKQUOTE][/FONT][/TD][/TR][TR][TD]
[/TD][/TR][/TABLE][!-- BBCode Quote End --]Hi. I\'m a Brit living in Spain. Yes you have the right to live and work here but there are a few things you need to do when you arrive.
In order to be able to work and have a fully functioning bank account you\'ll need to apply for your NIE. This is your financial identity number for non resident foreigners. You\'ll have to go to the National Police in your area with two passport photos, fill in the form then a few weeks later it should be ready for collection. Then you\'ll be able to buy a car, have cards with your bank account and work legally.
If you want to apply for Residencia the process is currently taking around 18 months but you don\'t really need it. Your NIE and EU passport is sufficient. You\'re not supposed to be here 365 days a year without your Residencia but it\'s never a problem if you\'re an EU citizen. When you open a bank account you\'ll have to give an address in the UK though and then just your Spanish address for mailing, and if the police ever ask you just say you spend a lot if time in Spain but it\'s not where you live full time.
I don\'t know much about teaching English in your area but at least being able to work legally will give you a leg up.
Remember that health care isn\'t free in Spain and they\'ll bill you for ambulance service should you be unlucky enough to need it. So... make sure you fill in your E111 before you arrive. That entitles you to free medical cover in Spain with the exception of dental care. It\'s only valid for 3 months, after which time you\'ll have to reapply for it via the UK or take out private health care. You can also pay Spanish social security contributions, like our NI but it\'s quite expensive.[addsig]
