English Lingerie In Spain
« on: November 19, 2004, 04:05:23 PM »
Hi

I am thinking of setting up an English lingerie mail order company here in Spain, which will concentrate on selling well known English lingerie brands to the ex-pat population. I already have a UK based lingerie business, but feel that there could be a market here in Spain, due to the amount of ladies that keep asking me if they can buy the products I have brought over here from the UK.
I have only been here 2 months and thought that I had better do some research before plunging headlong into bankruptcy, and find out if this is something British ladies would like (oh and the gents too) :D
Any comments would be appreciated; it is better to be safe with money than sorry and having to go home bankrupt :(

Thanks all

Just Jo

Hi Just Jo --

Sounds like a good business opportunity. I would definitely focus on the geographical areas that have a large British expat population... especially where little to no Spanish is spoken.

I had a interesting conversation once on the train from Gandía to Valencia (in the Valencian region) with a British woman who had been living in Spain (concretely Oliva, Valencia) for the past 13 years and spoke minimal Spanish. She was headed towards the city to take advantage of the final sales at Marks and Spencer before it finally shut its doors to the public. She commented that she would especially miss shopping there for the lingerie because she had difficulty finding her (larger) size in the traditional Spanish shops.

I am sure Katykat would be an excellent resource as there are many enclaves of British and German expat communities throughout the Valencian/Alicante regions... especially in the smaller towns such as Denia, Oliva, Cullera, Peñíscola, etc.

Good luck with your idea!

Do women frequently show each other their lingerie?

I guess I shouldn´t be surprised...I once overhead a lady in a crowded subway station talking VERY openly about her period with another lady.

Must be a female thing.... :o

Seriously though...I would look into all the government hoops you have to jump through. I think there are obligations to hire x amount of spaniards, whether it would be an S.L. or S.A. which can have advantages or disadvantages. If I remember correctly you even have to demonstrate that you would earn x amount of Euros each year...probably so the government will know how much of your money in taxes they can count on wasting each year.
