Is there any work in Spain apart from teaching?

I\'m moving to the south of Spain for 6-12 months with my boyfriend in November. We really need to work to keep afloat, but i haven\'t got a clue what kind of work\'s out there. Neither of us speak Spanish (yet) so i\'m assuming getting a job might be hard work. I\'ll do anything, waitressing, bar work, and I would like to teach. Chris can do building work, gardening, teach SCUBA diving or do bar work.
What we\'re worried about is if we arrive out of season, will there be any work on offer, or should we hold off until next Spring?
I\'d really appreciate some advice
thanks!
Suzy

Hey Suzy,
You sound British, are you? If so, you may have a chance teaching English without having to learn too much Spanish. However, you really need to learn the language. Your husband might have a good chance in construction, if he can take orders. Building is UP in the south. Otherwise, I\'d say that you both need to affiliate yourself with a language academy that teaches Spanish/AND English. This way, you can always promote the fact that you are learning.
Hope this helps [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"][addsig]

thanks for replying Tracy
yes we\'re both British and we\'re hopefully moving to Spain for a while to learn Spanish and earn a bit of money before going to South America. My bloke can work for anyone, and its good to know that there is some construction work in the South. Does anyone know who to contact?
I\'d love to teach English,so I\'ll take a look at some of the Academies as you suggest.
thanks so much for getting back to me, its really helpful to hear from someone who knows what the situation is.

Suzy,
For possible construction jobs, go to the [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.expatriatecafe.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Web_Links&file=index&req=viewlink&cid=1\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]English Language Publications in Spain[/A][!-- BBCode End --] link from our Web Links database and check out ALL the Andalusian magazines and their classifieds. There are even MORe real estate magazines and links which promote NEW housing projects for buyers. DO a google search and put in "real estate" and "andalucia." You\'ll come up with a TON of info.
good luck[addsig]

Can you get a job in Spain aside from teaching? Well, I am (barely) living proof that you can. I have been living in Barcelona since April and I have not stepped foot inside a classroom. That doesn\'t mean that I won\'t try in the future, but I pay my sole bill (rent) by bartending, waiting tables, and singing. You have to be extremely resourceful to survive like this. Sometimes, I make great money, sometimes I don\'t. But the key is to ALWAYS network. Every time you work a gig, make sure you find out about the next gig, or at least get to know someone in the know. Trust me, when your livelihood depends on it, you become very outgoing. Since there are two of you, the odds are a bit better. Kill two birds with one stone. Get a room together to save on costs and then venture out all over the city, day and night, handing out your resume. It won\'t happen overnight....but it will happen IF you take the initiative.
