weak spanish=tough place/job??
« on: August 27, 2002, 11:30:00 PM »
Hey everyone,

I am hoping that this website is a God send of sorts, or at least can help with the things that are holding me back from taking the step to working in sevilla!!

my biggest question is this:  I am debating getting into a CELTA class starting in october for 4 weeks, BUT my worries are based around my weak spanish skills.  I know that for 4 weeks I will be around native english speakers, but after that, it\'s up to me to find a job (mid-November) and a place (I think maybe a homestay....are their a lot of those opportunities available?  are they a good idea?  I figured it would be the best way to immerse myself in the language, which is my goal!  I have also heard that students like to live with native english speakers.  is this a good idea??)

basically, I am doubting my ability to not only find a good job teaching and then finding a place, but also just getting around in sevilla without a decent command of the language.

I know that this is Madrid-based, but I was hoping someone who has been in these similar shoes could help!!

Thanx in advance,

Todd Pozen [addsig]

Hey Todd,

While you\'re taking your CELTA you could also take Spanish lessons. There are so many ways too, to learn Spanish for FREE. You are, after all, in SPain. Many people have meetings in local pubs and bars etc. for language exchange, there are all sorts of social groups. I\'d definitely read any of the local English language papers-- they usually advertise the best language learning opportunities. Also, what about sharing your apt/ or room with a Spaniard?? That\'s a perfect way to force yourself to learn [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] "WHere\'s the soap?" "I thought you said it was YOUR turn to take out the garbage??!!" Etc.

Are you American?? If so, then yes, you will have difficulty finding legal work/work in general. All the more reason to get involved in social groups. The more you network yourself, the more opportunities will come to you [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"][addsig]
