Hi! I need help....
« on: August 26, 2002, 12:29:00 AM »
Hi!

I am planning in heading to Spain in the next 8-9 months with the hope of finding work there. I am a native Spanish speaker from Argentina but raised in Australia so I speak both English and Spanish fluently. I have a university degree and have worked mainly in Finance and Sales (both in the Tourism Industry) and I am in the process of doing a TEFL course.

Ideally I would like to stay in Spain for a few years. How difficult would it be obtaining a working visa prior to arriving in Spain? Or would it be better looking for work on a visitors visa? How difficult would it be finding a company to sponsor me whilst I am there or prior to going?

My idea initially is to teach English and eventually move into the Tourism Industry (or do both at the same time if possible).

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Lily

Hi Lily,

To answer your first question, it will be very difficult for you finding work without being in Spain, unless you are affiliated with a placement program (from your TEFL training). I\'d definitely try to find work on your visitors visa. But you will probably have to settle for illegal work, at first, anyway.

You definitely have a lot to your advantage. Spain has great relations with Argentina and Australia, so they\'ll love your passport status. You have a hightened knowledge of business and finance AND you work in the travel industry. All very good qualities that Spain looks for in an English teacher. I think you\'ll do great. Research as much as you possibly can now, make as many contacts as you can now and once you\'re there, MEET MANY PEOPLE and network yourself! That\'s your best bet.

Good luck,

Hi Tracy,

Thank you for your feedback. I\'ve done a fair amount of research and felt like I was hitting a brick wall at times but your advise has given me some encouragement.

Is there anything else that I should perhaps be aware of, that I may easily overlook?

Thank you once again.
