BCN: Help With High Speed Internet
« on: August 24, 2004, 06:31:17 PM »
Hello All,

Mt partner and I are thinking about moving to Barcelona this winter for 3-4 months.  We'd like to be able to have high speed internet available from our rented apartment.  Can anyone give me some idea as to how long the lead time and approximate costs of installation for this service.  I know about wireless cafes and such but our goal is to take our existing VOIP set-up from the US with us.

Thanks,

Wly   :)

Most parts of the city aren´t equipped with digital lines. Usually ADSL is what you will find, but it really isn´t that slow for personal use. It will cost about 60-80€ to get connected and about 30-45€/month service. The bright side is that it includes your phone line. Keep in mind that it will take them about 2 or 3 weeks to get you hooked up, and when you leave about 45 days to free the circuit (welcome to Spanish efficiency). This is all according to Telemafia....errrrr I mean Telefonica.

Satellite TV here (DirecTV style) is more popular than cable. The largest and really only one to consider in my opinion is: Canal Satelite. There used to be two companies but, instead of competing and lower prices to the collective benefit of consumers everywhere, they merged and will occasionally increase prices. Oh well, they offer EuroNews, CNN International, FoxNews  :o , CNBC, SkyNews and BBCNews completely in English if you like and other channels with many or all films available in English if you like. It's not a bad value if you can swing it.

There was a cable TV carrier here a few years ago, but honestly I don't recall their name and they never really took off. Maybe someone else will remember and we can look them up. I hope that helps a bit.

Cable is what I was referring to as far as digital lines. As far as I know, only the newer areas and Center of the city (Passeig de Gracia) have it. On the topic of wireless, I don´t know because ADSL has served my needs and I have not looked into anything more sophisticated.

Timo-fonica....errrr Telefónica offers a wi-fi plan. Here's some info on it: RIGHT HERE!! They've even offered it in Telefónica-glish. ;) How nice of them....

I do have to say that you don't see wi-fi's here in Spain like you do in the U.S. Shiloh's right. People tend to trust in their ADSL's nowadays. I've used my mom's cable Internet in the US. It's much, much faster than ADSL, but less secure as cable can be hacked easier since you share the same main coaxial cable with many other subscribers. That doesn't happen with ADSL, but I'll leave the geeky explanations alone for now...    ;)

From what I understand, ADSL here is faster than the cable based internet connections that are available.

You might want to check out AUNA´s services as they might be what you are looking for.

Despite all the new \"competition\", Telefonica still has a stranglehold on the market and fortunately/unfortunately is still your best bet.

We have our ADSL, phone lines and fax lines through Timo errr. Telefonica and have not had any real complaints.
