LIVE IN BAR MAIDS REQUIRED
« on: August 19, 2004, 09:02:25 PM »

We are currently recruiting bar staff for our bar in the Marina in Puerto
Sherry.
Here is a little information on what the job entails:
We run a cafe/Bar in the Marina of Puerto Sherry, in El Puerto de Santa
Maria.  This area is a holiday resort for mainly national tourism and we
start the season from Abril onwards.  This area is not like the Costa del
Sol or Ibiza so a sound knowledge of Spanish is essential.
We expect you to work 7 hours a day we open at 1600hrs so we will mainly
work late nights but the day is free for whatever.  The work is very simple
serving drinks and collecting glasses we have no food service.
We provide accomodation here in the Marina just a few moments form the bar.
The accomodation is a groun floor room, it has a bed , T.V., ensuite shower
and toilet, and a small kichen area with freezer, hob and microwave.

The beach is a short walk away and the town centre about 5 minutes in a car,
we have bycycles for you to use.
El Puerto is a lively place from June onwards and the people here are
friendly, and open there is also a large American Naval base in Rota which
attracts alot of Americans.
We have a great clientele and if you have  lively personality you will make
lots of friends.
Emilio my husband works the bar side of the business and I work on the
apartment rentals.
We expect you to work 6 days a week and 7hours a day with one day off during
the week weekends are never free as this is our busy time, we pay you 100
Euros per week plus your share of the tips or the week.

We do like to take girls on that speak fluent English and Spanish.  You
wouldn't need a visa.
If you are interested please send me a c.v. with full lenght photo by e mail a.s.a.p.
Kind Regards,
Karen Redolosis

400€ a month with only one day off a week? Sounds just a little better than slavery!

Take on girls that are fluent in English and Spanish? Asking for a lot for so little, I think...

I thought the average wage in Spain hovered around 800-1000€ a month. Working a standard 40 hour work week. Whatever happened to the notion of work to live not live to work?  :(

Please don't be too harsh regarding this job offer.  I have been to this marina and it is nicely situated.  A few years ago, the marina was out of operation, or perhaps had not yet opened, but the facilities are very beautiful.  When I visited the area, I liked it because it is set apart from a town and is quiet.  It seemed to me that the resort was built to serve the marina.

I would reccommend obtaining a driver's liscence and a car because the distance to the nearest town, Puerto de Santa Maria, maybe a bit far for running over to the drugstore, market, or the local McDonalds, oops!, I mean cafe.

Consider that the wages include housing, bicycle transportation, 400 euro/month and tips.  If this job is like waitressing in America, it will be the tips that save you, not the salary.  And considering that the clientel will likely be international yaughtsmen, some of them may be forthcoming with American style tips.

(The only aspect I would like to negotiate for, given that I was interested in the position, is an apartment set a little distance from bar.  I don't think I would like to be followed home by some drunk American yaughtsman.)

Isn't this sexual/gender discrimination? Why girls? I don't think you would get away with this type of advertisement in most other European countries! Slave labour & discrimination
I don't care how nice the surroundings are.

You have got to be kidding me!  400 euros a month is pure slavery.  I could care less what the area or accomodations are like.  I have lived in Spain for 12 years and I know how the restaurant/bar business works.  They work you hard and expect to pay you nothing.  Believe me that the tips won´t be that great because the Spanish leave you around 20cents to a euro even if their bill is more than a hundred euros and I wouldn´t depend on American yachtsmen to make up for your pitiful salary.

Yes, it is also very sexist to ask specifically for females.  It probably means that you will be harrassed on the job if they attract customers because of the cute English speaking waitresses.

Disgusting!  Pay a decent wage and maybe someone will want to work for you!
