Visas in Spain
« on: August 14, 2002, 02:06:00 AM »
I\'m coming back to Spain in jan. 2003 to visit for a few months, find work and then return to canada to get a work visa. How difficult is it to get a visa?? Do people work without visa? What dooes the Spainish gov\'t do if you are found to be working without a visa?

Visitors visa- my understanding is that they can be for periods of 180 days, with a review by local policia afte 90 days. Is it possible to get a longer visa (i\'d like to stay for a year as a visitor) and can this then be turned into a student visa if i decide to do my TESOL in BCN?

Any feedback/info. is greatly appreciated

Hi mtomkow,

This is a sticky situation. It\'s different for everyone. PLease read the following [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.expatriatecafe.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=65&2\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]POST[/A][!-- BBCode End --]

on our message board to help you understand the system better.

The only reason you should return to Canada is if you\'ve been offered a contract (see the TEACH ENGLISH section on our Main Menu). Or if your visa expires. However, many people stay beyond their visitor\'s visa allowance.  And yes, many people work under-the-table.

It MAY be possible to stay longer. EVERY SITUATION IS DIFFERENT. You\'d have to personally contact the policia in Spain, once you arrive. YOu generally have to have a GOOD reason to stay tho. They won\'t just approve a visa extension for "sight-seeing". Then again, WHO KNOWS, maybe they would![addsig]

Hey Tom

Any luck yet ?

I\'m from Toronto and plan on moving to Madrid in 2003 as well.  I have

spoken to the Spanish Embassy and was told that you need a job offer

in Spain than you have to come back to Canada to start the paper

work as the working visa will only be issued in Canada.

Also, visas are free for Canadians, employers do not have to sponsor us

as they would if we were moving to the U.S.
