born again irish seeks advice
« on: June 28, 2004, 04:20:49 AM »
Hola -

I hope this does not get too complicated but:

1.  i am an american who has just received dual citizenship with ireland.
2.  i have the equivalent of an irish birth certificate but it will take 4-5 months for my passport to be issued.
3.  i am moving to madrid in august for tefl course and hope to work legally in the fall.

my questions are:

1.  do you other expats (british or irish or otherwise) prove EU citizenship/work eligibility solely with passports? and
2. or do you have working papers issued in your home country before leaving? and
3. do you think i can do anything with this birth certificate alone? and finally
4.  are you guys hooked in automatically to the spanish healthcare system?  (i have ZERO familiarity with socialized medicine and have had no health insurance at all for a couple years - it would be great to get hooked in - how does it all work?)

Gracias!

Generally yes, passport seems to be the only acceptable form of id. I have never heard of anyone proving it by means of birth certificate. In my case I had no working papers issued before leaving, you get it all sorted out when you get here. Once you get a legal job you should automatically receive your health card giving you free/subsidised treatment (if not pester your employer!)
