Hi...I need help getting started
« on: July 22, 2002, 06:45:00 AM »
Hi,

I will finish up a teaching credential in December fo this year and would really love to teach in Spain.  I would like to have a job lined up in January, but I know it is difficult and am not sure how to get started.

The credential that I will receive is a CLAD (cross-cultural linguistic academic development) multiple subject credential.  The CLAD part of my credential is required because we have such a large amount of foriegnlanguage speakers in CA.  Would the CLAD aspect of the credential be marketable in Spain?

Ideally, I\\\'d like to teach English to Elementary level students.  My Spanish is broken and leaves a lot to be desired, but I am very motivated and excited to learn.

I have some business experience (managerial econmoics major plus 2 years work experience running a education center), and was wondering if that is at all beneficial.  I\\\'ve seen some posts that it is, but I would think not for elementary level positions.

Any suggestions on how to get started or comments on my post would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much for your help!

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for stopping by the Cafe. I think you\\\'ll find a lot of useful tips here! Especially at the [!-- BBCode u2 Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.expatriatecafe.com/teach_english.php\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]TEACH ENGLISH[/A][!-- BBCode u2 End --] section of the website.

I definitely think your CLAD is marketable. Every little bit helps. THe business experience also. However, I would try to gain more experience actually teaching English as a second language. Have you heard of Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA)? Check them out. They offer a LOT in the way of training and volunteerism.

Hope this helps!
