what schools offer student visas?
« on: November 22, 2003, 09:03:50 PM »
Does anyone out there know of any language schools where I can enroll for classes long enough to obtain a student visa?

I really want to work in Spain (I've studied there twice) when I finish college this May.  I realize that it is virtually impossible to get a work visa, but I was hoping to somehow get a student visa and the work \"under the table.\"

Has anyone done this?  Is it feasible?  Please let me know.

Carolyn

Hola! I don't know specifically about language schools, but it sounds like you and I are kind of thinking along the same lines.  I'm graduating this May also with a secondary ed and Spanish degree, and I studied in Madrid in the fall of 02 and I absolutely loved it.

So, my goal is to figure out a legal way to go back and work or study for a year or so.  I'm actually going to be in Avila from April until the beginning of July in a secondary school teaching English through a program at my college here.  I'm getting graduate school credit for it; it's not a paid job or anything.  But my plan is to check out the opportunities in Madrid and the surrounding area while I'm in the country in the spring, and then hopefully head back next fall, in September or October.

I don't know about the language schools, but I'm looking into taking some courses at a university in Madrid and then teaching on the side to support myself somewhat....does anybody have any advice or experience with the university system in Spain??  Let me know.

Carrie

Hola Carolyn,

You can check out Don Quijote Language School...(I'm assuming you're American rather than British?) you need to attend a course for more than 90 days and the school has to vouch for you.

At don Quijote, you can go for up to 52 weeks and you can break it up (however long you decide to go for) and go to different locations.  I went to the don Quijote Barcelona location for 11 weeks.

Hope this helps....

Salud!

I know that in the UK and Ireland, you are allowed to work 20 hours per week if you have a student visa.  I wonder if this holds true for all EU countries?  Does anyone know if Spain allows this?  If so, Carolyn, it could be a way for you to work legally, at least part time...

Thanks, guys.  I appreciate the info.

Since my last post, I've actually applied to a graduate school in Madrid...NYU.  So I hope I get accepted, because it looks like the only kind of Visa Spain gives out easily is a student visa.
