Which month to take TEFL course?
« on: September 14, 2003, 07:15:04 PM »
I am an American currently teaching English in Japan, and plan to move to Madrid next year and get certified.  My question is: what month should I take the TEFL course to maximize my chances for getting a job?  If I TEFL (I just made it a verb) in September, will I finish too late for the autumn hiring season?  Or, if I TEFL in August, will I have weeks of hanging around unemployed while waiting for my job to start.  Any advice is appreciated!

Hi bella,

The best time job wise would be when the new school year starts in the fall, so I'd say planning on a training in August would work out fine.

If you don't mind me asking though, since you're already teaching in Japan, you didn't need any certification for your current job?

Hi there...

this is my first post on this site.  Im not sure if anyone will read this but I thought  Id answer your question.

Japans market for english teachers is mainly in the conversation department. They will hire just about anyone (native speaker) with a degree.
A lot of schools have their own books, and teachers are trained to use these.

Basically being a conversation teacher in Japan just requires us to facilitate conversation (to put it basically), and doesnt really require any certification.  Although I will say that just being a native speaker doesnt make you a good conversation teacher...

hope this was of interest to someone...:)
