A couple questions.
« on: May 16, 2002, 05:15:00 AM »
I am moving to Barcelona this February. My wife thinks that it would be a good idea to find a group of Americans to hang out with. Does anyone know of any groups in Barcelona?

Also...I was wondering if there was a way to get TV channels from the US. I am only interested in Channels like CNN, MSNBC, etc. I just want a good way to keep up on news and my wife wants to keep up on her English. :roll:

HELLO Shiloh--

The best way to find other Americans in BCN is to check out the classifieds in all the English language publications around town- I\\\'m sure there are a FEW. Last time I checked \\\"Barcelona Metropolitan\\\" was the biggest, although their website has been out-of-comission for awhile now. You\\\'ll be able to get it once there.

And as far as TV is concerned, CNN is easy to get but a bit pricey. You\\\'ll have to purchase satellite TV. Last time I was there, there were rumors of Spain getting cable. But I don\\\'t know if that\\\'s been done yet. I\\\'ll have Jeremy post the answer, since he lives in Madrid now (and knows virtually EVERYTHING).

Good Luck to you!

Hola Shiloh, Tracy has talked me up here so I guess I have to deliver :)

Right on RE Barcelona Metropolitan Tracy for finding other Americanos to hang with. I will only add that the online version of Barcelona Metropolitan is at www.barcelonametropolitan.com (it was down however when I last looked today) and they have a classifeds section that you can look at for making new friends.

As for cable in Spain, it is offered by Madritel which has recently been bought up by Auna Cable ( http://www.aunacable.es ).

RE digital satelite TV, the Spanish satelite and pay TV companies are:

* Canal Setelite Digital - http://www.csatelite.es
* Vía Digital - http://www.viadigital.es
* Canal Plus - http://www.plus.es
* Quiero TV - http://www.quierotv.com

Canal Setelite Digital & Vía Digital were the two major competing forces but they just merged. Check into it all to see who offers what.

On a side note, I get CNN here in Madrid via a normal parabolic antenna and it is free but the town hall paid for the antenna installation and the first year, after that it will cost us only $20/year :)
