Getting my ducks in a row...
« on: March 27, 2002, 06:26:00 AM »
Hello,

I\\\'m new to this site and am working on finding out as much as I can so I can get my \\\"ducks in a row,\\\" as I\\\'ve heard people say around here. The information on this site in invaluable--thanks so much to all of you who put it together!

I want to be in Spain for the 2003 school year. So, that gives me over a year to get my stuff in order.

I want to teach English while I\\\'m in Spain, but I\\\'ll do anything to get my life started there.  I\\\'m planning to stay in space for a year, at the least.

Currently, I\\\'m working on my Masters in ESL. I have about 5 years of ESL experience--counting volunteer and paid work. This year will be my 3rd year of full-time teaching. I have a bachelors degree in spanish, women\\\'s studies, and public health. When I\\\'m ready to go to Spain I\\\'ll have all of my licensure work done for ESL, just not my Masters.

So, my main questions are:
-Will not having my Masters degree complete make a difference?
-Will I have any luck finding a workplace to sponsor me? Is it feasible to find a job without going to Spain a few times prior to my long term commitment there?
-Does anyone know of any grants or scholarships for teachers to teach in Spain? I\\\'d even do some PUblic Health stuff, since I have a background there...mostly in women\\\'s health.

Thanks for your help and advice!

-Jaime

Hey Jaime--

Thanks so much for the compliment. We try real hard to keep this site current and FUN.

At any rate, being as that you have so much experience/degrees/certifications I think you\\\'d be a PERFECT candidate for the Fulbright Teachers\\\' Exchange program. This is an interesting site and can be accessed at [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://grad.usda.gov/International/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"]http://grad.usda.gov/International/index.html[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --]

The direct link to their SPAIN program can be accessed ][!-- BBCode u2 Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.grad.usda.gov/International/spain.html\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]HERE[/A][!-- BBCode u2 End --]

Research this site and if you have any further questions, post it :)

Good luck and WELCOME!

Thank you so much for the info on the Fulbright Teacher Exchange--I will most likely apply for that as long as my boss is cool with it (and she seems to be so far).

I have a somewhat random question. Someone was telling me about a foundation in Madrid that deals with ESL, literacy, and related issues. Unfortunately, this person could only remember that it is called \\\"fundacion...\\\" and that it is run by the daughter of a famous Spanish writer, \\\"Gabriel Something.\\\"   So, of course I\\\'m interested in learning more about this foundation, but the person I talked to can\\\'t remember any details.      Can anyone help?

Thanks again!

Jaime

Hi Expat_Teacher,

I researched this question months ago but never came up with an answer. I thought I had posted it here...Don't know why there was never any response. I'll keep looking out for an answer!

Could it be Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He has family in the north of Spain, but he is know more for his work in...is it Mexico? Argentina? Ugg...COLOMBIA!

Also, I know there is a \"Fundacion de Federico Garcia Lorca,\" but I don't really know what it's about. You might want to check that.  And the \"Fundacion de Ponce Leon in Madrid is an English language school. Try that also!! Hope this helps!

Hey Tracy,

Sorry I was AWOL (more like burried in homework) and din't come back with an answer right away.

It's the Ortega y Gasset Foundation and they primarily teach linguistics, not ESL. Bummer! If you type the name into google, a couple of sites will come up with more info, if you're interested.

Take care,

Jaime
