2012 Autonomo Setup
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:11:14 AM »
Hi everyone, I am new to the cafe and hopefully finding some much needed answers.  I am an american citizen moving to madrid in september and looking to setup an autonomo.  When I move to madrid, I will be signing for a TEFL class to teach English.  I am looking to setup an autonomo so that I can stay in Spain as long as I can.  I looked at previous posts about this but still not getting clear answers.

Can someone tell me the steps needed to become autonomo?

Can I obtain autonomo before I move to Madrid?

Do I need startup capital to become autonomo?

Any help or website direction would be a great help.

Hello Conhall1958 --

Your being an American and wanting to become autónomo is really contingent on your visa status that you will have in the country.

Just because you come and sign up for a TEFL course -- that will not necessarily make you legal to be a self-employed worker which is what the "autónomo" status is.

To be autónomo, you need to have a NIE (nÁºmero de identidad de extrajero) plus legal working/residency status in the country.

You don't need any start up capital since you are registering as a self-employed worker, not a company (sociedad). However, you will need to make minimum monthly payments to Seguridad Social of at least 250€ once you register.

When you invoice your clients, you will need to retain the IRPF (impuesto de la renta sobre personas fÁsicas). This retention applies to invoices to businesses not individual people unless you are billing another autónomo.
