NIE Issue
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:50:28 PM »
Hello everyone!

I am currently studying in Spain and my NIE expires in September of this year. I applied to this program and am wondering if I can just renew my NIE here or will I need to do the visa process all over again? I am living in the same region that I applied to for the program.

If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows something about this please let me know!

 thanks!

As long as they don't change anything, and as long as you renew your NIE before the period expires (rumor has it that you can renew during the three months after the nie has expired) you should be just fine.

I changed programs this year and there were no issues. This might be a good one to ask at your local extranjería before the summer - better to have wasted two hours waiting in line than to be told in October that you have to go to the US to get your visa!

Where are you in Spain? If it's Madrid, I can tell you the number to call to start the renewal process.

I have renewed my NIE several times when changing assistantship programs or repeating one without needing to reapply for a visa back home -- thank God. All you have to do is make an appointment before your NIE expires by calling a number and giving your card details. A lot of people will tell you different things, but I don't think it matters whether it's a day, a week or a month before, but just as long as you make the appointment before it expires (and have proof of it -- print off the justificante). I made my appointments about a month out from the expiry date the first time and the second time a week before it expired and there was no problem. Just have fun dealing with those snotty Spanish funcionarios who process everything when it's time to turn in your documents.

But yeah, the best thing to do would be to ask the program directors or the extranjería as halydia said, though sometimes even they don't know the deal exactly ???

thanks for the advice guys! I'll want to renew my NIE in Castilla y Leon. The extranjeria office I dealt with last time was equipped with horribly rude funcionarios... but hopefully they'll be nice this time around! Once we get notified about regional placements I'll go back to see if it's possible. I'm assuming it is!

I once went to renew my student NIE card in Madrid to work another year as an auxiliar and the woman at the desk asked me for my "marks". Since I had a student card, I must have been studying she insisted impatiently. I had to explain the language assistantship program to her. And since I had all the necessary paperwork with me, just for fun she made me go to the bank and get a printout of my account balance.

Good times.

If you were a student, I wonder why she would want to see your grades just to renew your NIE!

The thing is that we're given student cards to work as language assistants whether or not we study while in Spain. It's kind of a weird situation where we're technically working but haven't got work visas. Even the ßitchy funcionaria who I had to deal with the renew my student card had no clue that was how it worked. I guess she wanted to see my grades to prove that I wasn't defrauding the system, which is (or was before shít hit the fan in this place with the crisis) what other people sometimes did to stay here.

To renew your NIE, all you have to do is call the Oficina de
Extranjería on 902565701. Then when you go to your appointment you need 3 passport size fotos, a copy of your
passport, medical insurance papers, school contract (or university enrolment proof) saying how long
you'll be here and how much you'll be getting paid a month and the form "model
EX11."

When I applied for the NIE back in September I used the admissions letter of the graduate program I thought I was going to do. But a month before that program started I decided on another grad program since they offered me more scholarships. I don't know if I should go back to extranjeria with the documents of grad program I'm attending now or just leave it alone...

since the NIE process took SO long I don't know if it's necessary to do everything over again.

But I'll need to renew my NIE in the summer for the north american culture assistant program. I hope I won't run into problems...

what do you think?
