Non-teaching jobs?
« on: February 04, 2012, 10:42:35 PM »
I apologize if this has already been asked, but can anyone direct me toward sources for finding non-teaching work in Spain, preferably in Madrid? I've applied to the language assistants program for next year so I'll be all set, but my fiance is planning to move with me and he has zero experience or desire to work in a school setting. On the bright side, he is an EU citizen, so that should open up some doors, right? Suggestions?

Thanks!

The fact that he's an EU citizen means a world of difference.
Remember, unemployment amongst young people is brutal right now, with figures said to be somewhere around 40%+. However, he could start by checking out such websites as: http://www.infojobs.net/

Unless he's got some highly sought after skills, I'd suggest he'll be in for a rough time competing against all the other Spaniards. There's an entire generation of people in Spain who were convinced education was the key to getting ahead in life and are facing the reality that Spain doesn't have the industries or infrastructure to provide them with work or to pay them well. Finding work in English teaching is dead easy as a native speaker. You barely have to lift a finger to get it. In almost every other sector, it's damn tough right now.

Buena suerte.

I'd have to agree with jimbob. Jobs are extremely hard to come by in Spain, especially if you're younger (I've heard 48,6 % are unemployed). I know of people who have multiple degrees and still cannot find a job. Many public institutions are facing cutbacks. And even among those that work, many are mileuristas, meaning that they make less than 1,000 € per month. So there is a great need for certain foreign languages (especially English and German) so that they can find work abroad in more prosperous countries like England and Germany. Which is why teaching foreign languages is the easiest job for us to find and generate some income with.
