Why Madrid?
« on: March 13, 2003, 01:38:00 AM »
Hello all--I\'m planning to move to Spain within the next year & have narrowed it down to Madrid or Barcelona (I\'m a city girl).  I plan to spend a week in each before deciding, but would love to hear your reasons for Madrid over Barcelona.....be honest, I\'m looking for your true thoughts....Thanks! i love this question. And this is what i would suggest: If you are a "true" city girl, you will probably like Madrid a lot more. It\'s the capital city, they party until 7AM, there\'s a huge "mezcla" of people, culture and rhythms...There\'s also Castillion spoken there and a wider variety of things going on in the centre. It\'s also isolated, centered and dry (which can be a good thing if you like HEAT).

BUT, it\'s a city. And aside from the very centre, and even there, it tends to look just like any another city.

Barcelona, on the other hand, is a bit more flamboyant, artsy and eclectic (am I spelling these words correctly??). You\'ll get two languages there, you\'re closer to the shore, you\'re closer to France and Italy etc. I\'ve heard that people dress a bit more stylish there (as opposed to Madrid, which is very conservative!) And the city itself just has a much more mediterrean-feel to it.

So...based on those FEW things (I\'m sure there are more!) you have decide not which city is better in general, but what type of girl YOU are and what you\'d prefer.

Good luck, and let us know! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif\"] [addsig]

Hola:

I LOVE to put my 2-cents in on this debate. I am a big supporter of Barcelona. I just cannot fathom anyone preferring Madrid over Barcelona. We have the beach. Come *on*. That alone should seal the deal. We party until 7am as well. But we do it with a bit more zest. I MAY be biased, but someone surely can back me up on this. Bring it![addsig]

This will turn out to be an interesting thread indeed.  There is absoultely nothing that interests me about Barcelona.  I could care less about the beach.  I think what attracts me to Madrid is the charm of it all.  The people there are friendly and the food out of this world.  I will visit Barcelona one day, but then again, maybe I won\'t.  My heart is in Puerto Rico, but my body moving to Madrid.

Why Madrid? That is a very interesting question which I have yet to understand. However, if you would like, here is some info about Barna.

Well, this may be late, but never.....

For me, the argument for Barcelona does end at the beach.  BCN is great but it tends to lack in the area of openness as Madrid.  I apreciate the architecture and beauty of the city, but the Catalonians can be hard to deal with.

Madrid on the other had is fantastic.  It has the architecture and the historic barrios that spouts out tons of great resturants, bars and clubs.  Yes, the club life is more "fierce" in Madrid then in Barcelona by far.

There may not be a beach nearby, but there are enough local pools to provide adequate eye candy....... [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif\"]

Good luck with your choice.[addsig]

OK, I agree with ALMOST everything that has been said on this board.  Madrid does have more friendly people and it is a very large city.  The other advantage is that Castillian is the main and only official language.  It is also at the center of the country if you wish to easily wish to travel to any point in Spain.

As for me, Barcelona was the better choice because of its more liberal atmoshpere.  It is a very diverse city where you can find just about any culture from the world.  You can find everyone from Andulucians to Cubans to Pakistanis here.  Castillian is spoken as much as Catalán because there have been a lot of Spaniards that have migrated here over the past 50 years.  The history is rich and the food, I\'m sorry to say, is much better here than in most other parts of Spain because of the strong gastronomic tradition here.  The neighborhoods here are absolutely stunning from Ciutat Vella to Gracia.  Last but not least, it is a coastal city, meaning that the temperature is regulated with mild winters and comfortable summers.  The beautiful Costa Brava is only 30 minutes away by train, as are the mountains.   The natural layout of the city is beautiful, especially when viewed from the foothills or from an approaching plane.

The people here in Catalunya do tend to be more reserved, but will take an interest in you if you take an interest in them.  Sometimes a simple "Bon Día" or "Adeu" will suffice.  Also, many of the foreigners that have moved here, as well as Spaniards from other regions, are very open to making new friends.

I don\'t mean to confuse your decision too much, but I felt like I had to represent Barcelona a little bit on this message board.

Salut i ¡visca Catalunya!
