Anyone in Barcelona?
« on: March 13, 2003, 01:29:00 AM »
I\'m looking for some feedback from someone living in Barcelona.  I\'m heading there in a week or so to look into moving there.  Any suggestions on what it is like to live there, how hard is it for an American to find a job teaching English, finding a place to live (I\'m kind of over the roommate thing, want my own space) or which TEFL school is the best there?  My ultimate goal is to make a living (teaching English) and live in an amazing place while I learn to speak Spanish.....any suggestions are MUCH appreciated.

Also, any bars/cafes/bookstores/areas that expats hang out in?  I\'d like to try & meet some people who are doing what I am dreaming of.....

THANKS! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_lightbulb.gif\"] [addsig]

M-

Don\'t forget to peruse some of the older post here at the cafe. There\'s been LOADS of people from BCN, dishing about the city. [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif\"] [addsig]

Hi,

I\'ll tell you right now, it is NOT easy to find a job teaching English in Barcelona, at least not for an American.  It\'s a long, hard process to get the appropriate working papers, and a lot of Spanish schools just aren\'t willing to take the time and effort.  They have to give priority to all EU citizens, meaning that as far as English teachers are concerned, it\'s the teachers from England and Ireland who get most of the jobs.  But, Barcelona is a great city and it\'s worth a try (which is why I continue to try!), and if you are going to take a TEFL course (which you really should if you want to teach English), I very highly recommend Oxford House College, which is where I received my certification.  The teachers and tutors are wonderful, the school is in an excellent location, the course is fabulous, and it is Trinity College certification, which is one of the two most highly recognized TEFL certifications in Europe.  But, if you don\'t necessarily have your heart set on Barcelona, I think the market is better in some of the other cities in Spain.  And believe me, the whole country is beautiful!
