Any English-speakers in Cantabria?
« on: February 28, 2002, 12:05:00 PM »
Hi folks,

Any English-speakers out there living in the west of Cantabria / east of Asturias (I live in San Vicente de la Barquera) who would like to get together for a bit of socialising? I haven\\\'t tried the Irish pub in Torrelavega yet, that might be a nice place to meet up. I\\\'ve just moved here with my Spanish wife and am enjoying the life, but am missing contact with English-speakers. There are very few foreigners / ex-pats here, which has its advantages as well as disadvantages.

cheers, Jim

Hey Jim --

It's been awhile since you posted, so I just thought I would ask if you were able to meet up with any other English speakers?

We don't have many members out your way (that I know of) so your input would be great here!

Hope all is well!

Hi Jim,

Are you still there, in Cantabria, on the Asturian border?

I'm moving to a small village north of Oviedo, sometime soon, possibly late August/early Sept. this year, to assist friends with a farm project, (during my free time), whilst earning my living, (hopefully),  teaching English - either privately or at a language school, depending on my interview technique! LOL

I'm 56, female and English, which is probably miles away from your own description, but, nevertheless, if you and your wife would like to be in touch with me, now that I'm about to make the move to Asturias, I'd be glad to have the link - you certainly have picked a very scenic little town for your own base in Spain -  lucky you!  :P

I'll be adding more info about my plans . and asking lots of questions of other more experienced Forum members,  via other threads, trying to make sure I'm as prepared as I can be, prior to making the move  - I've just spent an amazing fortnight in Oviedo, setting up my accommodation and meeting the volunteer team out at the farm.

Needless to say, I fell in love both with the Asturian people and their gorgeous Capital city - voted the cleanest in all of Spain, again, despite the hoardes of visitors, just like myself,  trampling everywhere across the pink marble pavements of the  stunning 'Old City' !  LOL

I do hope you will read this and respond, along with anyone else based up in the cooler, wetter but incredible Northern Spain - we need much more input from that very unstereotypical Spanish region!!    :)

Hasta luego,
Zorrasabia.

Hey zorrasabia,

I couldn't help but notice your user name because from the spanish slang that I learned, the word zorra is a pretty bad insult for a woman;)  But it does mean fox to those of us who are not quite as foul-mouthed!  Anyways, just thought you might like to know if  you didn't already.
Saludos,

Kevin

I'm speaking for zorrasabia but I'm pretty certain, knowing her a bit from her posts (and seeing just how 'sabia' (wise) she is with the words she writes! B) ), that her nick is a bit of a play with words and meanings... Correct me if I'm wrong there Z.S.... Hope you don't mind my answering for you... :D

And, back to the topic of the thread, I don't personally know of any English speakers in Cantabria but I can tell you that it's without a doubt one of my top three comunidades autónomas in all of Spain. I ate the best seafood of my life during a trip to Santillana del Mar. It's an amazing area and is so close to many other amazing areas. You will absolutely love it!

Best of luck... Please keep us posted and hopefully a local Spaniard or Expat from that region my stop by and leave us with a post for you and adept63.

Hi Kpnsevilla and  Tony

Thanks to each of you, for your comments re. my nickname here -  I really appreciated Kpns's warning re. the meaning for Spaniards of the word 'Zorra' and Tony's very gentlemanly attempt to provide a possible explanation for my choice! LOL

At the time I chose the nickname 'Zorrasabia' for use here, I'd simply translated my English e - mail  address into Spanish and thought that sounded fine - in my free time, I campaign for British wild mammals and birds via various orgs. and had chosen the poor despised and persecuted fox species as my special symbol,   so incorporated within my personal e-mail addy!

Only much later, on a visit to Spain, had a friend explained, whilst laughing his socks off, just what the word 'Zorra' meant - certainly not just a female fox or vixen! (an important lesson for me, about not simply assuming it would be O.K. to translate literally from one language to another....!).  I was stunned -especially as I'd signed off many messages here, with exactly that nickname!

Eventually, , given my great affection for all things 'foxy', I decided to keep the name as part of my personal crusade to rehabilitate female foxes in the minds and hearts of  the Spanish people - in addition to my continuing crusade within the U.K.!! LOL

I'm therefore quite immune to all sniggering and am proud to acknowledge my 'Spanish' nickname before all who visit this site!   :P

BTW - vixens (female foxes),  are incredibly clever animals - did you know that they can delay pregnancy, even after a successful mating, until availability of food and other resources is certain?   Oh, and only the alpha female breeds - the others then support her in raising her cubs - so no over populating of territory, unlike our human species!!   Wow!

So - gracias and hasta luego,    :)

Zorrasabia.
