Any Advice for applying for 2012-2013
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:04:24 AM »
Hi!!

I know that many of you are excited and anxious about receiving your placements for this
coming year!!!
I'm actually applying to the program when it opens up in November.

Do any of you guys have any tips or advice for new applicants?
What was the most difficult/confusing part of the application?

Thanks!!!

My advice would be to do the online application when it first comes out in November and submit it without any attachments, and then do the time consuming stuff (writing the statement of purpose, getting the letter of recommendation, etc.) later on when you have time. (Unless they make it mandatory to send in supporting documents within two weeks of applying - I think that at this point there are no consequences for submitting them later, as long as you make the deadline for the first round of assignments.) When you submit your online application (which is just some basic facts about yourself, really), they give you a number which indicates the order they will assign your region. You are much more likely to get a preferred region (especially if it doesn't have many spots) if your number is low.

I say all of this because I waited until December, when I had a vacation, to submit my online application because I needed the time to read the instructions carefully and write the statement of purpose. (I didn't realize I didn't really need the statement of purpose for awhile.) Then I ended up with a much higher profex number than I had expected (in the ballpark of 1450). I did eventually get my assigned region since I asked for Madrid and Madrid has a ton of spots, but I spent some anxious weeks wondering how things would turn out.

I'm sure that other people will have useful advice based on their own experiences. Good luck!

I agree!  Sign up on Profex NOW and make your CV now.  You can also write you letter now (they usually don't read it  btw).
For me the most difficult part was navigating profex!!!  When I first applied there were no instructions in English.  I had a friend from Barcelona take a look and help me but even she was confused.
All of your documents have to be no older than 3 months so do start gathering them yet.
Good luck!

Not all of this advice is application specific, but I figure it's good to be prepared.

Aside from what the two previous posters mentioned (x1000 for ajnabiyya's advice):

1. Start saving money.
2. Learn Spanish.
3. Before you apply, get to know the different regions and the different cultures within spain.
4. Participating and reading forums like this one help you remain sane during the long waiting periods.
5. Be polite and courteous when communicating with various entities even though the process is frustrating. It can help you later on.

I'll add more later if I can think of anything.

download the manual and read through the portion on how to fill out the applicattion online, which can be confusing.

That way when it opens up it'll be a breeze and you can complete it quickly.

a lot of people are having issues with their background checks being dated too early (i.e. being dated in fall/winter 2010 when they have to get the visa in summer 2011) and the visa process requiring a fbi check from the last 3 months.

if you submit your online application in november you get a good inscrita number so when jan/feb comes around you can do the fbi portion part and submit your materials in feb. so that  you can get a placement in early march. I think the cutoff for the early placements was mid feb....i think.

BUT ABOVE EVERTYHING - Don't put anything off.  have your online app done in november and materials sent in by february.

i made the mistake of waiting to submit my online app in january, getting a high inscrita number, and THEN waiting to submit my materials until the end of march.

i'm still waiting and hoping i might get placement.

Do you think its worth it to get the background check first ( maybe in october) and then send it in when i apply in November and then get a new one before i apply for the visa? Will that improve my chances of getting a lower number?

I'll probably write the letter now. What do we have to write about exactly?

you don't need a background check to get a number. in fact you don't really need any documents to get a number. you just need to fill out the online application which is a basic application where you put your education and work experience. once you submit that you get an inscrita number

you send the background check application with your hardcopies. you can send those in february and you'd still be considered for the early placements in march..

otherwise you'd have to pay for two background checks and thats just really unnecessary.

anyone have a different opinion on this?

Obviously, apply early and organize all of your supplementary materials (especially the letter of recommendation, because that's the one you kinda have the least control over as to when it will get done) early, maybe even before you fill out the online app.  DEFINITELY read the instructions before and during the online app process, its a very cumbersome system.
About the background check/medical certificate: just get them ASAP.  No matter what you'll have to get a new medical cert to be within the 3 month rule for applying for a visa and you need a copy of the background check to receive a placement so its probably best just to apply for one in November or December.   It would be annoying to have to get another one, but I know that mine, between fingerprints, postage and what I have to pay the FBI cost about $35.  So, you could wait until late December/ early January to send in your background check so its dated late enough, and then not get it back until early March (because they can take up to 12 weeks to process) and then not have a copy of the background check sent to your embassy in time for the first round of placements.  Or, you could just pay another $35 and have more peace of mind.  I know that people's budgets are tight, but in the long run, I think knowing that you could get a placement in mid March as opposed mid May or even later is worth the possibility of spending an extra $35.   Also, there seems to be so much confusion this year because the FBI background check requirement is new.  It could be that for next year they really standardize it to within 3 months of when you apply for a visa (as oppose to just being dated 2011 and you'd have to get one again anyway!)

I'm not entirely sure they don't read the letters, but Rmarie's theory is probably true. I have a friend (male) who got a letter of recommendation from a teacher who referred to him as "she" the whole time. No one thought anything of it.

Perhaps when you get a regional placement they read them to see what your interests are and to place you, but logistically, they don't have enough time/people to read 3,000+ letters that essentially say the same thing. They probably get a once over, but I doubt that it is a critical component that determines whether you get in or not.

sorry for the confusion!  I meant the letter of motivation that has to be in Spanish.  Although if they don't read that I doubt they pay much attention to the recommendation letters.  I know about them not really reading them (or at least they didn't a few years ago) because some people were very upset about it.  They spent a lot of time writing it (and delayed applying because of it) only to realize that it is "first come first serve".  I obviously wouldn't write "blah blah blah blah blah" BUT for sure don't spend a ton of time on it.
Good idea to ask for the recommendation letter now!  I totally forgot about having to get on ppl about that.
I didn't need an fbi check so I can't help with that.  The other docs you need for your visa (medical cert, etc) can wait until after you've been placed (mid April/May).

As devil's advocate, I say play it all by ear...plans are for schemers.

...totally kidding.
I think there's at least a combined two thousand years' of wisdom in the above posts.
I second everything.
The biggest advice I could give?

Don't be afraid.

Focus on your application timeframe and your goals, and everything will be fine.

I think the language of the letter of purpose actually doesn't matter at all....I'm not even sure if they read it, to be honest, since we aren't selected on any other basis than having completed the checklist of things online/via mail as soon as possible.  It's more about getting things done (and getting your timing right) that counts, rather than things like your resume or cover letter.

Also, since I didn't end up doing the program this year, I emailed asking if I can reapply next year.  They not only said that I can, but they also gave away some important info---the application period could start in November OR October this year.  So, check the site whenever you can....it opened up earlier than they said it would this year, and I just got lucky when I randomly checked the page and learned the application period had started the day before (wayyy before they said it would).  That allowed me to get my first choice region!

That caught me off-guard, too.  Definitely start checking the program site the month prior to the posted date (and maybe have started everything needed by then, too.)

I chose Catalunya--and I haven't seen anyone else on this site yet who's a first-year there, so I think it might be a pretty tough region to get as a first-year...another reason to prepare in advance and keep checking to see when the application period opens up!

All of this advice is great!

But my advice would be to have this program in the back of your mind, but try not to think about and stress over anything. Apply in November (or whenever the application process opens) get a good number, and take your time gathering all of the documents.

There will plenty of time for stressing, as you can see with all of the posts. I guess it is good to get your ducks in a row or whatever, but to spend a whole year and a half thinking about what it will be like to live and work in Spain will take away from the time you have in America. This is just my personal opinion, of course.

This great advice! Although I've been day dreaming out this since last August, I got discouraged halfway though the application process and put it off longer than I should have. My number was high but I eventually got a spot in Madrid. It's less than three months before I leave and I still have no idea what type of school I will be working at or where. I am doing my best not to stress out about everything and enjoy the things I have going on here in the States (my sis is getting married in 3 weeks etc etc).

thanks for all the responses, really some great information here!

couple quick questions - it was mentioned that getting Catalonia as a first year is very difficult.  is this definitely the case?  and with that, do a lot of people stay for an additional year(s)?

also is this program directed more towards recent college graduates or does everyone have a fair shot?  I just turned 32 and don't want to be the old guy in the group  :)

I've been teaching English for the past 2 years in Santiago, Chile so would that increase my chances of getting accepted to the program and/or my top choice region?

cheers!

Cataluña is a popular region, but as long as you apply as soon as possible and get a low inscrita number, it's not that hard to get into. In fact it's probably harder to get into regions like Valencia and las Islas Canarias because they don't have as many positions open. And I know many auxiliares decide to stay a second year, but after their second year, auxiliares don't get any kind of advantage/preference so that opens up space for first years.

I kind of get the impression that this program is direct towards people in their 20s, but there certainly are participants in their 30s and 40s.

And don't worry too much about not getting accepted. While they do make sure that you meet the program requirements, all that matters when they're accepting and assigning regions to first years is your inscrita number. To my knowledge, no preference is given to those with more experience. So just apply as soon as you can!

this program almost sounds too good to be true, no?  I've heard horrible stories about people (specifically americans) trying to get jobs (work visas) teaching English in Spain... I stumbled on this program just this morning so I'm still in the exploring stage  :)

Hola a todos,

I'm new to the board, but looked through some of the old posts for information.
I will be applying for the coming year and just have one question (for now). I know it was stated some time earlier in the thread, but just wanted to clarify... You actually get the inscrita number after you fill out the application? I was under the impression you weren't actually assigned a number until all of your hard copies were sent.

Any advice is appreciated!

Muchas gracias!

Yes, you get your inscrita number after you submit your application.  You have to send in the printout you get after you complete the online part of your application with your hard copy info.  So, submitting the online part is what's important, but you can't get assigned until all of your papers are in, so it does pay to be timely.

Hello! I am going to apply for the 2012-2013 year as well. I have read through this thread but I am still a little confused about one thing. After reading the program manual on the website, I was under the impression that they needed to receive the online app AND the hard copies in order for that inscrita number to really mean anything. I am living abroad right now and won't be home until late February. It is possible for me to round up my hard copy documents now, but if I do the online app in November, I might not be able to get the hard copies sent in until December/January. Will I be pushed behind somebody that maybe sends in the online app after me in December, but gets their hard copies in before me?

The only way your placement will be affected by waiting to turn in hard copies is if you don't get them in before the first round of placements are made.  This year placements were first made in March, in order of inscrita number.  So, unless they start giving placements next year in December/January you should be fine if you have to wait a month or two between the online app and getting all your hard copies in.  I know some people had to wait a while to turn in all their hard copies, because they were waiting to get a recommendation back or something like that.

Okay great, thanks!

I have another question. If I apply through the Spanish government and not through CIEE, does it give me a list of regions/provinces I can request to be in? And does it provide a description for these regions/provinces?

The Spanish government programme does give you a list of regions (but not provinces) that you can choose from. However, just because a region is on the list does not mean that the region has auxiliar positions available. They do not provide a description of these regions so you'll have to do some research on your own. After you are offered a regional placement, your region may ask of what kind of school or what city you would like to be placed in; although they don't always honour those requests :P

Hola a todos,

I am also going to be applying for fall 2012, and I'm hopeful of being placed in Andalucia. I've done my fair share of research and know you can only select which AC (not a specific city) you wish to teach in, but my question is, at any point can you actually request a city on special grounds? I'd like to be placed in Malaga as I have an apartment to live in there. (you mentioned this might be possible, sweetest_strawberry)?? It's a year away but I'm already excited!

I agree!  Sign up on Profex NOW and make your CV now.
How do you sign up for Profex if the application window isn't open? When I go to the site it just gives info about the program but states in bold letters that the window for 2011-2012 is closed...nowhere to sign up.   Also I'm assuming when you say "CV" you mean Curriculum Vitae?  I just have a résumé.  Does it make  a difference?  Are they wanting us to list our experience with the Spanish language or what?

Hi, I am applying this upcoming year as well. I hope to apply the day that the profex application goes onto the internet so I get a low number, and mail the rest of my documents afterwards. I already have a letter of recommendation from my employer at the international academy where I worked as a RA this past summer, and it is very easy for my college to send my transcript out whenever I need them to. I am fairly confident some days, but others I am quite nervous. This thread has been very helpful.

Also, I noticed that the internet page for the 2011-2012 school year was taken down this week and I view that as a sign that the 2012-2013 application will go up soon. I guess all that I can do is check every day!

Good luck everybody!

From what I understand a CV in Europe is equal to a resume in the states.  When I was talking to my Spanish professor and she asked for my CV I said that I had a resume she´d hadn´t really heard of a resume and what she thought of as a CV was equal to a resume.  In the states, a CV is a little different from a resume (from what I´ve been told, at least), but that not important here.

Hey,

When I try to go to the program website, it says that there is an error and the page cannot be found. this is the address I am using: www.educacion.es/exterior/usa/en/programs/...assistants/default.shtml. is this happening to you guys as well? I want to apply when the application goes up, and I am worried I won't be able to access it. any help is great!

It's a new website page now. I had the same problem until someone posted the new website page: http://www.educacion.gob.es/aux1/eeuu/convocatorias-programas/convocatorias-eeuu/auxiliares-conversacion-eeuu.html

Okay so I finally found the link to register on the Profex website.  I also reviewed last year's manual and wrote a list of required materials I'll need to apply.  A few things I can knock out now...like college transcripts (I went to three colleges but only graduated from one so I don't know if I need all my college transcripts or not. I am going to ask a supervisor that I am cool with to write a letter of recommendation. I am going to try the statement of purpose...which is just an essay right?  It stated that the essay should be addressed to the official from the consulate.  I figure I can get the doctor letter too...I guess I'll need a series of tests to ensure that I am free of the diseases listed but maybe I should wait to see if the list changes with some new rare disease.

Okay so now that I am registered with Profex, I took a look at the "curriculum" section and the info it asks for and I see that it requires an upload of a passport sized photo.  I don't remember reading about that.  Is it okay to just use a passport like photo from Walgreen's or what?

Hello everyone!

I am not the most vetted of applicants. I was supposed to have something lined up in Italy but it fell through. So, excuse me for my stupid questions:

1) I just registered myself and got the confirmation email. I clicked the link and activated my account and everything. Does that mean that I have received the coveted profex number? Am I in a good position to be in position, as they say?

2) I am a bit confused with the CV part. I am following the manual but when I follow the link that it lists (educacion.es/profex) I do not see the "Auxiliares 2011" link on the page. Then, after I log in, I do not see the "Tramites Disponsibles" link to click which should lead me to "Profesores."

I am sorry if I am coming across as incredibly stupid, but I'm not the most fluent in Spanish and am trying to follow this manual as carefully as possible, and I just don't see these links!

Please, any help for anyone who has already completed the CV part or anyone else, would be greatly appreciated!!

THANK YOU and I look forward to getting to know you all as we go through this process together!

So I wonder if it matters that I want to use a former supervisor instead of my current one?  I felt that this supervisor was the best choice (I've been burned in the past by people that I wanted to write recommendations) so I'm leery about asking someone I am not sure about...that said I still felt some kind of way after asking this former supervisor...because people talk. Where I work we change supervisors very often...I've been with my current for almost 5 months....the one I asked to write the letter was my supervisor for a very short time...but I feel that he will write a good letter for me.  This supervisor always compliments my English speaking skills and is generally REALLY NICE to me.  My current supervisor is better than other supervisors I've had in the past but I just don't see this person writing a letter.  *Sigh.*

Honestly, it probably doesn't matter. This program isn't about credentials or who has the better experience, it's about who gets their stuff in the fastest (inscrita number). I've never heard of anyone getting rejected based on qualifications. Since you have time to choose, that's great, but don't stress, because in all likelihood, it won't matter at all.

I had these issues too. We do not have our profex number until we submit the app in November, or whenever it opens up. And in order to do the CV, you just click on "curriculum"...the directions from the manual do not work for this year's website.

Thanks a lot for clearing that up. I was a bit nervous that I was just missing something.  ??? Good luck to you!

I've completed the general information in the curriculum section...I feel a bit nervous..like I might screw it up or something.  So basically, once we apply (when the window *officially* opens) we just need to send all of the hard copy stuff as soon as possible in November right?   I noticed that you had the option to upload some documents.
