Contacts in Valencia
« on: February 17, 2003, 01:28:00 AM »
Hi, I would like to go to Valencia and work.  I\'m a bit lost as to where to start.  I need to make a decision within the next few weeks.  I recently received my teaching degree and I am presently teaching French immersion in a middle school.   I\'m not too picky about work.  I know I wouldn\'t be too keen on teaching English to business people, I would hoever do it if that is what is offered.  I have extensive experience working with children.  Ideally, I would like to teach in a school,  (primary/middle).  I am presently looking through the links trying to get a feel of Valencia. I would like to start work in September, I could however arrive earlier.  However long do I intend to be in Spain? I very flexible, I expect to be gone at least a year.   Eventually I would like to volunteer/work in Latin america.

So any contacts, advice, more useful links would be great!

Hi.  I don\'t have any useful advice for you as we are in the same situation.  My husband and I are moving to Valencia in September.  I will be attending the University of Valencia for the fall semester to finish my degree.  If we can find jobs and make a go of it there, we would like to stay for at least a year or two before moving on.  Just thought it might be nice to meet someone going to Valencia as this site seems to be frequented by those going to Madrid or Barcelona.  Good luck in your endeavors.

Well I wish you luck.  I hope to possibly find work there soon.  I\'m starting to panic, a bit.

Good luck and keep in touch.

Hey there chantal-

I tried emailing the address you had but it didnt work. Anyways I\'m in the same boat as you are. I want to move to spain when I gradguate college around Feb of 2004. I\'m nervous and I\'m trying to save right now. I lived there for 6 months last year and fell totally in love. We should keep in contact so that when I go maybe you could show me some of the ropes. I know the area and they have some good english academy\'s and I have heard that they are always looking for people. If your looking strictly for schools Valencia does have an international school on the outskirts of the city heading towards the discotec\'s. I can\'t remember what highway it was but I drove by it a couple of times so I know it exsists. Right now most of my focus is on finishing at the university but each day I dream of when I can leave and live back in Valencia. I think my course of action will be to do the ITC course in Barcelona for Feb and then look for a job in March to teach in Valencia. I think it\'s just gonna be one of those things that it\'s either a hit or a miss. Either there will be something available or not, I just hope I find a streak of good luck. Maybe if you find something you can shoot information my way. Otherwise I\'m gonna save and hope for the best. Some things that I do know is DONT LOOK FOR AN APT BY AN AGENT... you have to pay out your ass for that, if your a student go to the University there are postings everywhere. When I was there last summer there were rooms available for like 80 Euros a month for a room with other University students. If you have a spanish friend who will help you can always check out the paper but watch out for the scandolous people!!!! Wallstreet and The Opening were the big english academy\'s out there but I think The Opening was shutting down. There are a bunch of Wallstreets and look in the Blasco Ibeniz area, there\'s a handful of academy\'s there. Good Luck, keep in touch with me- anybody going to that area, we all know how it feels to be making this kind of change with a lack of assurence. If you have any other questions about anything I know the area pretty well and I will give any help that I can. Good luck, hopefully I will talk to you soon

Katy

Hi Katy -

I\'m also going to Valencia when I graduate University in June of 2004. Right now I live in California but I\'ve never been to Spain. I like Valencia because it\'s so close to Ibiza! Party time!!! I\'m also looking for a job teaching English at a school. I was wondering if you knew what type of certificate I need, TEFL or something else. I have never taught English before, but I am an English major at my school and I have worked with children. Any advise?

hey there sibsie~

we have actually talked before, I never go to Denia but I had german friends that lived there... I live in Minnesota and its cold here, I dream about the 2 weeks that I vacationed in Gandia (my favorite city) last summer... I can\'t wait to go back to Spain. we will definatly have to meet up when I get there.. so what is it that you do there? did you have a hard time finding work.. I think my plan will be to get TEFL certificate and find a piso in Valencia and hope for the best... how much do you think is a good idea that I should have saved to live on.. I was thinking 4000 Euros in my bank would hopefully support me until I get steady work.. I really hope for the best, how did you do it??

Hi Katy and Sibsie - I\'m a girl too, and I LOVE to PARTY!!!! So yeah, we\'ll get along just fine. I\'m gonna try to get my TEFL in Valencia, then get a teaching job there somewhere. I figure that I can find a place when I get there, maybe look at some postings on the local Universities? Any suggestions on that? My Spanish also isn\'t too great, but I\'m taking classes. Where are you guys from, and did you have a hard time with communicating? I\'m sure I can deal with it though. Your right this page comes in pretty handy! Talk to you guys later! Wow I\'m finally getting posts to this topic.   That\'s great.  It is interesting, because I\'m thinking it might be better for me to stay here in Northern Canada for a little while longer... a year. Money\'s good, benefits good, the timing is good.  I do want to learn my Spanish thought.  Perharps, I\'ll go to latin america for a bit during the summer.  I haven\'t received any luck in job searching and it might just be better for me to stay and gain a little more experience teaching.  However, a proper job offer might make me change my mind.

Still making choices!

Hey there~

I\'m in Minnesota where I go to the university in Minneapolis for sociology!! this place is FREEZING!! but its a nice state.... hey meenja thats so cool, at least I will have in mind 1 friend.. is there a school in Valencia to get your TEFL certificate because I have been looking all over the internet to find out but I have only seen Barcelona and Madrid.. let me know because I would much rather prefer there...  if anybody is looking to learn more spanish do it in Valencia... they have a kick ass school- Galileo Galile.. I went there for 5 months and I learned a lot of spanish not to mention the school is in the university about a 5 minute walk to the beach. You can live in the dorm with other spanish students so its really cool...so when is everybody going? I will probably leave Feb of 2004.... I can\'t wait, Im working my ass off right now to try and save money... well talk to everybody soon...

BESITOS!!!

I found this website for a school in Valencia that offers the TEFL certificate, it\'s called the Campbell College Teacher Training Centre (not center):

[!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.teflboard.org/school/364/index.php?action=find\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.teflboard.org/school/364/index.php?action=find[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --]

There are some online classes too, this is just one of them:

[!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.teacher-training.net/usworldwide/info/courses/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.teacher-training.net/usworldwide/info/courses/index.html[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --]

For a more extensive search, go to [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.google.com\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.google.com[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --] and type in \'TEFL Certificate\' and either \'online\' or \'Valencia\', whatever you\'re looking for and it pops right up. The internet is great.

I\'m planning on moving to Valencia and maybe taking the TEFL certification there, since they might help you find a job since it\'s local, and you\'d be able to meet more people who are interested in the same thing. I\'m going to graduate in June of 2004, and I plan on moving there in August of 2004. Enough time to get my certification and find a job before the school year in September.

I\'m not sure I want to take a language class. I\'m taking some classes here and I\'m hoping I\'ll catch on to the accents. If not, maybe I\'ll consider that language school.

Later! Time to  [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_sleepy.gif\"]  [addsig]

Hey there meenja-

ok so I looked up some web-sites but even the one you gave me didnt give me an info on TEFL training places in Valencia. In fact if Im remember correctly when I was living there I saw this school but it was either closed or it was a school to teach people Egnlish Im not totally sure. I wrote them an email so hopefully they will get back to me. I would rather get the certificate in Valencia then Barcelona but I have a feeling its only offered in Madrid and Barcelona.... I will wait and see... and ok another thing.. just to let you know going to Spain in augest may not be the best idea. The whole country literally closes down ESPECIALLY Valencia... I dont even think classes are offered during this month.. I know in june life is normal, in july the vacationing starts and the coast is filled with people from madrid and other in land cities... of course a lot of german, french and english head to alicante and benidorm and of course IBIZA!!!! but by augest there is nobody in the streets, its like a dessert.... so you might want to think about going to spain either in june or september... just a heads up...well keep in touch all and if anybody else finds a TEFL course in Valencia just let me know

thanks

The Costa Blanca news has a good jobs section.  It\'s doesn\'t especially cover Valencia but I do quite often see teaching jobs offered for the costal areas where I live.

I\'m very lucky in that I don\'t have to work.  The people I do know here have got jobs by firing off CV\'s to companies.  There is an awful lot of work in real estate and in hotels in my area.

You\'re right about August.  It\'s when all of Spain vacations so if you\'re looking for work or want to enroll in a course then you\'re out of luck.

Other than that, we\'ve just had the coldest winter on record here.  I actually saw snow on the ground just a few k\'s from where I live.  Thankfully Spring is here now.  The sun has come back, the scent of orange blossom is filling the air and it\'s getting busy again.[addsig]

I emailed that website I gave you two days ago and still have not heard anything back. You might be right about their not being there. So maybe a good idea is to go to Barcelona and get the TEFL there. There are so many places that offer it in Barcelona, does anybody recommend a place they\'ve gone to?

BTW, this message board is EXTREMELY helpful!!!

Howdy Folks!

I lived in Spain from 1993-1995 but that was as a missionary.  I have a degree in Spainsh and I am finishing up a year of grad school in Spanish Lit at UNC.  I have decided that researching literature is not what I like to do, I like to teach.  I am still totally in love with Spain.  My Spanish is very good, and I can even understand a little Valenciano and Catalan.  Anyway, I am trying to make my way back to Valencia or Barcelona and start teaching English there.  I want to go in July and then start work in September.  Is getting a work visa a big deal, or is it really unnecessary?  Do people just work illegaly?  I can\'t wait to go back!!  I used to know Valencia like the back of my hand, and I will be happy to make that my home.

I know what you mean espanolatheart.... I can recall everything... the other night I was having a conversation with a friend about america vs european (well spanish mostly) living and she just didnt get it. shes been nowhere outside her home and has no idea of what its like to even walk down a street during fallas when everybody is crazy. or to sit by the ocean at a resturant and eat paella on a saturday after noon. or those tube glasses that they fill 75% up with whiskey and add a splash of fanta... ahhh the life is incredible- I can still recall it all in my mind. I almost regret it- its like an addiction and I swear I could be obssesed or something. MN is just cold and seems so boring- which before I left I never thought of it that way.... now I look at this place and feel like I\'ve outgrown it and my real roots were left when I stepped on the plane to come home..... when I lived in valencia there was such a joy in everything- like takeing the bus 1 1/2 hours to get to the new mall called Bonnaire- and listening to everybody talk.... the damn annoying tele pizza guys with thier scooters which you can hear all night rrrrzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... the smell of the night just walking around... its these things I wish to recapture... so I guess I hope for the best and that I turn out with a stroke of luck and score a job before I run out of money.... I will probably only get like 5000$ saved up before I go... which take away like 1500 for the school in barcelona and the 1 months rent to live there leaves me with about 3000$ to live on until I can find a job... does this sound like too little to go with??? hmmm well I will try to get as much as I can but oh well I guess I will see....  this site has been great inspiration guys- keep checking in every once in awhile....

besitos

Hello again everybody-

well nobody has written in awhile but I see that there is 430 views on this page... which I will admit Im sure like 50 of them are from me but in all honesty it makes me a little nervous because people- valencia is not that big of a city.. its a pretty good size but it doesnt have a lot of english schools there.. in fact when I lived there (1 year ago) they were closing down all the openings and the only schools that existed were the Wallstreets and I believe there was only like 2 or 3 of them around.. My friend that went to one of them told me that the people that had beed working there had been there for a while with no plans to move.. maybe I\'m just being nervous but I am jumping into a future with no exact plan of what I will do. I guess I just want to give a heads up to everybody that hopefully we all find a way to make this work... anybody feeeling the same way??? plus the brits have a head start on us americans.. i dont know now I\'m getting pretty nervous and I\'m not looking to leave for spain until feb or march of 2004.... any words of consolation??

katy

Oye Katy-

Through what US school did you study abroad with?  I studied through Rutgers University, NJ ya hace 2 anos and am finally gettin back in July.  I have friends who returned right after graduation with the hopes of just hanging and teaching English for a year, however with absolutely no TEFL training, teaching experience, or education credentials (except for a BA).  Needless to say they have had no luck and are either back in the US or returning shortly.  I am taking the ITC course in BCN this agosto.  You should plan to have a lot of money.  The course itself costs a lot, plus airfare, plus un piso... plus getting around just for the month duration of the course is a lot of money.  But hey after 2 years home and saving I\'m ready to get back.

I really like this VLC page!! After reading all the posts I am so stoked to get back.

hasta ahora

Andrea

HI

I'm moving to Valencia too and would welcome any advice.  I'm actually going out with my kids so not too much partying for me.  Any information on areas would be good, anywhere where you wouldn't live with a family for example?

Thanks
