Hello all!
I am an American hoping to find work in Spain tutoring English. Of course, the first challenge is being American and finding work in an EU country. I have anecdotal reports many have done it, as have other non-EU citizens like Australians.
Are the non-EU teachers legal with work permits or working under the table?
It seems most of the discussions center on Madrid and Barcelona. There must be demand for English tuition in other places like Cadiz, Valencia, Taragonna, etc.
What about Malaga? It seems there is a huge expat population of UK citizens there. Does that mean there is no chance there for non-EU teachers?
Do private English academies work through the summer?
I have taught English in Taiwan and Greece. Many years ago when I was on Tenerife and Gran Canaria I found private students, all adults. The income was not enough to live on but it supplemented what I had.
I realize Spain has around a 20% unemployment rate. It seems this situation has created two schools of thought on demand for English tuition. One school says Spaniards will drop discretionary things like learning a foreign language. The other says Spaniards will try to add qualifications to their c.v. such as English skills to make them more competitive in a tighter job market. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your advice and comments.
