Okay so I have a question. i'm working in VAllecas and i have a few questions:
1) is the padre piquer office where we need to make all of our appointements?
2) should we wait until orientation? i arrived over here in MAdrid on the 8th, so I'm assuming it should be okay to wait until the 22nd to book an appointment
3) i never got a stamp on my visa (heard this is actually quite common) also i took a train from france to spain there was only a handwritten receipt that i bought on the local train (cause we could only pay in cash) so will this cause any problems?

You have to have an appointment to apply for your NIE within 30 days of being in-country, but there are no available appointment dates (required!) until January. The Ministerio is well aware that this is a problem, but they have no recourse yet (rumors of group appointments from orientation are circulating, but the San Felipe office didn't know anything about that).

So, I went to the NIE info office on San Felipe a few days ago, and was told several things.

1) There's still some misconception as to whether we are technically students (according to our visa and the "beca" nature of our grants, we are) or not, since we're working. The general idea is we're students.
2) They encourage us to apply for the NIE as students.
3) You need an appointment to drop off your paperwork.
3b) There's a 10€ fee, 3 photos, your letter and EX15/EX17 solicitud required.
4) The appointment should be at the Padre Piquer office.
5) *The appointment must be registered online (http://www.justificantecita.es/)
6) *Print out the online confirmation of your appointment date.
7) *Carry that print out until you get your NIE resguardo.

The EducaMadrid site has an explanation, too:
http://www.educa2.madrid.org/web/mjmartinezdelis/4.2-obligations

All of this was explained by a frustrated but very nice lady at the office. They get it--it's screwed up. They don't know what the deal is with the massive backup in appointments, but they also know that there are 500 of us arriving to do this process, so they're working on it. Per usual, this could change by the end of the month, but as of a few days ago, this is what I found out.  Good luck!

I'm not going to be able to be in Madrid for the orientation since I am arriving on the 22nd. I was hoping to meet someone who still needs a place to live and a roommate as well. I contacted my schools English Director and inform me of another Spain program called The International House in Madrid who has students and teachers looking or a place to live or for someone to live with. Hope this helps out anyone else who is in the same situation as myself  :)

At Packback,
I went to the website you listed in your previous post (http://www.justificantecita.es/) to register an appointment and was told I do not have an appointment set up. Do we have to go an Alien Office (extranjeria) and schedule an appointment and THEN register it online?? THANKS!

CarlyG,

You have to make the appointment via phone (+34) 902.56.57.01; you have to have your passport number and a phone number to do it, but it takes less than five minutes.  Most appointments are for january/february right now.  Once you have the appointment, you go to the website and register it, and print out a copy of the justificante and carry that with you (because your visa will expire before your appointment)  See the EducaMadrid site for a step-by-step: http://www.educa2.madrid.org/web/mjmartinezdelis/4.2-obligations;jsessionid=143B56D1673EB883F32E11E88C06D577

I have a question about the orientations.  On the first day of the two day orientation, the progam website says it is from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Is this correct?  Do they give you a 2 hour break or so midday?  Does anyone know if they provide lunch?

Also, I noticed that it seems like auxiliars placed in primary school have a two day orientation, but those placed in secondary schools have just a one day orientation.  Is this correct?

.. What Hotels/ Hostals are people staying at?

You can find the info on your specific orientation session at http://www.educa.madrid.org/portal/web/auxiliares

Hi All... help!
I was a late hire and just got my Visa approved to arrive on October 1, so I will be starting late and missing orientation.  When I received the job offer, they said it was acceptable to be late since I was a late hire, however I have emailed several people (including the 2 schools I am working at) to inform them of my late arrival and have received NO RESPONSE.  I'm getting VERY worried about arriving late with no info!!  If anyone can suggest who I may contact, or if anyone is in the same situation, please let me know!

Thanks :)

Hi Erica,
It seems to be quite common for schools not to respond to auxiliares' emails, so the odds of there being a problem are probably slim. As long as you have your carta de nombramiento you should be fine, but if you continue to get no response from anyone, you might want to drop by the Ministerio de Educación or your schools(s) to confirm that those are in fact the schools where you'll be working to set your mind at ease (for piso-hunting purposes you'll want to know for sure where you're working). Good luck and welcome to the program!

Thanks for replying.  I've defo heard that many schools do not reply, I'm more just nervous that I won't be arriving til October 5 so I'll have missed orientation and would just like some sort of confirmation that it's "okay" that I'm arriving late.  My cartas de nombramiento state that my contract begins Oct 1, but because I was working overseas up until early September, this is the earliest I'll be able to get out there. C'est la vie, I'm sure things will work out!  But if you have any suggestions as to anyone I may email at the Ministerio office, it would be greatly appreciated :)

I would contact one of these people:

mariajose.martinezdelis@madrid.org
leticia.moreno@madrid.org
irena.helena.jaroszynska@madrid.org

They are the contacts listed in the language assistant handbook, and they are also the ones who are running the orientations. They did tell us at orientation that they were so busy with us 1,500 Madrid auxiliares that they are having trouble managing to email everyone back, but they are the ones in charge of our program so they are the ones to write to, in addition to your school. The reality is that you may not get confirmation from anyone in Madrid until you actually get here, but it is going to be fine - there are a number of people arriving late due to visa issues from what I hear and they are expecting that, and as long as you have a letter of appointment there is definitely be a position for you. See you in Madrid!

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone knows the cheapest way to handle the phone situation. Ideally, I'd have a phone that I can use in Spain that can also make calls to the States. Is there a cheap way to do this? Is it significantly cheaper to just get a Spanish phone and rely on Skype for international communication?

Thanks for the help,

Sam
