Hello Fellow Expatriate Café members!
As a new group of Language Assistants is about to descend upon Spain, and especially in Madrid, I thought I would tell you about an online recycling group.
Perhaps many of you (Americans) are familiar with the community-based Freecycle initiative in the US where you join your local listserve and send and receive messages about things that are getting rid of/need.
The concept is simple, you have a bunch of things that you want to get rid of but hate to just toss in the trash? Post a message describing the articles and arrange a time/date with interested parties for them to come and pick up. Likewise, if you need something to finish off furnishing your apartment, etc...post a message and perhaps someone has what you need and they no longer want it.
The objects are given away (not sold or bartered) no strings attached. The idea appeals to the green idea of REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE and keeping excess things out of landfills.
There is a Freecycle network here in Madrid which is hosted on yahoo groups. I encourage you all to seek it out under "madridrecicla".
