i am new to the web site.  i\\\'m moving to Málaga in August to live closer to my boyfriend (he\\\'s malagueño).  right now i\\\'m teaching Spanish in the USA but i hope to be teaching English across the pond.  i am taking a TEFL/CELTA course this summer to get some certification.  anyway, any advice you can give me would be wonderful.  i have lived in Spain before- 9 months last year- but that was en paro.  this time i need to make some money!  so if you have anything to tell me about documentos, health insurance, apartment searching, and such... please post it!  ¡gracias!

Hola,

I posted a message in another section about moving to Barcelona or Madrid (considering these two cities seem to have the most opportunities for teaching English) but I am also interseted in Malaga because I have heard it is beautiful and my Grandpa was born there...He is now living in Venezuela, where my Father grew up, but hopes to visit again next year, considering I am planning to move to Spain in the Fall.

Anway, I felt compelled to write to you since I am also a Spanish teacher in the U.S. (at an elementary school in Seattle) and had an interst in Malaga, but didn\\\'t know what the opportunities for teaching are like there...
What grade level do you teach? Have you had any luck pursuing jobs in Malaga?

Good luck and hope to hear from you!

hola lisi!  thanks for responding.  i teach Spanish to 8th and 9th graders and French and Spanish (just the basics) to 6th graders.  i did not intend to go into teaching but the opportunity arrived and so far i have really enjoyed it.  i do plan to teach English in Spain and this summer i will be taking a CELTA/TEFL course that will give me some certification in teaching English.  i hope this will help me find a position.  last year i noticed that in Malaga it was much easier for a Brit to secure a job position because they are part of the European Union- they don\\\'t need to do the paperwork.  we Americans, then, are at a disadvantage because in order to be hired the company will have to go through a process involving visas and such.  to me it seems unfair but i guess that would be because i am an American looking for a job in the European Union.  anyway, so have you heard anything about positions available in Malaga?  since you are looking at Barcelona- you might try Manresa.  when i was there a small academy was looking to hire.  well, write when you get a chance.  ¡gracias!

Hi ladies.

Lisi, you know my feelings on living in Barcelona as I answered your Madrid vs Barcelona post on my message board but I forgot to touvh on Malaga so since Carmica is also interested I think this is a good place to post.

Malaga has it\\\'s nice areas but by no means is it in the same category as Madrid  :disbelief:

The only advantage I see to it over Madrid is the proximity to the beaches.

I also think that it is hard enough for non EU nationals (ie Americans) to make a living in Madrid which is a city of over 5,000,000. Malaga has 1/10th of that population so you can imagine how much harder it wil be to find work there

Also, the people in a smaller Andalusian city are much less likely to see the importance of learning English (even if it is Costa del Sol and tourism is huge), therefore reducing your amount of possible students that may go to a language school.

Hey Carmica, I know your relocaiton to Malaga has other motives :-)  and I hear ya! I would not want to live far from my Madrileña myself  :-(

I gues it also depends on what you are used to in the U.S.A., I am from NY and am very happy here in Madrid since it is a big city.

Hope my input helps.
