surviving in Barcelona
« on: January 23, 2003, 01:41:00 AM »
I\'m thinking about getting TEFL training from ITC and looking for work in Barcelona.  I\'m really excited about the adventure aspect of it all, but my question is: can one survive in Barcelona on an english teacher\'s wages?  My understanding is that most jobs pay 10-14 Euros/hr, 20 or so hours a week, or an average of 1,000 Euros a month.  I\'m not expecting to live in the lap of luxury, but can I pay rent, eat, pay student loans, do a little travelling and have some fun on 1,000 Euros a month?

Any advice from those who have been there is greatly appreciated.  [addsig]

I think you could. You would probably have to live with a roomate or 2. The cost of living in Barcelona is higher than the small towns in Spain, but WAY less than in the US. Plus for a little extra spending money you can give private lessons which go for about 20$ an hour[addsig]

Hey,

I´m living in Barcelona now with my boyfriend, and I can tell you that, especially when compared to the US, the cost of living is really, really low.  I can eat for a week on 10€ if I want to.  As long as you´re responsible with your money (as in, don´t go to clubs every weekend, because that is probably the most expensive thing you can do here), you can do it.  Oh, but you probably can´t live in your own apartment--find a roommate or two to share a flat with.  It´s less expensive and, if you get along, a good way to make and share friends!  Good luck!  Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions or just want to talk about TEFL and Barcelona!

Hey Virginia,

So you already in BCN, that\'s so cool...I wanted to ask you, are you working as a tefl teacher? And are you American?  If you are (I am) tell me what the job situation is like for Non-EU nationals?  I\'m tefl certified myself, taught in Prague for 6 mos. and I\'m moving to BCN in September.  Any info or advise that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Michelle,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you, for some reason I thought replies to posts on this website would be posted and go directly to the person who originally wrote the post!  Silly me.  Anyway, I\'m back in the US now and heading back again to Barcelona in about 2 weeks.  The TEFL situation is really, really tough in Barcelona for non-EU nationals; it\'s really hard to get a work permit, because employers have to give priority to EU nationals, meaning that all the good teaching jobs go to the teachers from England and Ireland.  I\'ve heard, however, that it will be easier when it gets closer to September, the start of the new academic year, because schools simply aren\'t hiring until then.  Anyway, I\'m still trying, because I love the city and frankly I\'m willing to live poor for awhile!  Reciprocally, what can you tell me about working in Prague?  Do you like the city, the people?  I\'m thinking about working there starting in September.

Hope to hear from you!
