SRedw!  4th year renewing your VISA and NIE?  Bet you could help me although I'm returning to Andalucia...

I've had no new at all from my school or profex since I got back to Canada and I've been trying to get info on the renewal process. I only seem to find information for the first timers.

- must I get a new student VISA?
- or only renew my NIE?
- what documents will I need to renew (medical certificate? police check?...)

Any help from anyone would be really hepful!

Catherine

Thanks! So you didn't have to request a new student VISA as well? (to get back in Spain?)

I just read somewhere that I should have renewed my NIE while I was still in Spain, before it expired... but I recieved no info whatsover from the program or my school... and I THINK they would have mentioned something that important!

Just send you a PM and I say talk to someone in the program (administration) and see if they can help you.  If you didn't receive any information, well, that's out of your hands.

Suerte,

Shawn

I am not renewing, as 2010-11 will be my first year in the program. I was wondering, though, do you have to return to your home country to get a new visa and then renew, or are you able to renew the NIE while in Spain and stay through the summer until the next year begins?

Am I missing something? I see the list of documents you need for your appointment in Madrid, but nowhere did I see it explicitly stated if you do or don't need to go back to the US. I guess I could infer that you don't since it's not mentioned, but I asked because it didn't seem obvious, although I had read the first post.

No, you're not missing anything.  This question has been answered before.  Look at the address where you have to turn in your paperwork.  It's in Spain, not the USA.  You now have your answer.  ;)

Ahh, I see. Thank you.

So I guess I am still a little confused. I know a few people who have done the program, decided to renew for the second year, and decided to come back to the States for the summer. They went through the whole visa process again. So you don't need to come back to the States to renew your NIE, but if you DO come back to the States, do you have to go through the visa process again (or was it unnecessary for them to do that)?

you don't have to go through the while VISA process again if you come back to the states for the summer as long as your NIE is renewed in the time frame given. So if your NIE doesn't expire until Sept. 21 then when you return to Spain, nenew it in the allotted time frame and don't renew your visa while in the states. When you get your NIE, look on the back and it will tell you when it expires.  You can't renew earlier then 60 days before it expires.  It's hard to say whether or not it was unnecessary for someone to go thru the visa process again without knowing their individual circumstance. The best thing is to know your expiration date and get the specific details on renewing from the region you will be living in.

Here's my example.  I am going to the States this summer and I don't have to renew my visa until November.  People who have to renew their visa before the summer, must put in their paperwork, get a copy of the justificante to show thattheir paperwork is being processed and they take that piece of paper with them to show it to passport control when they return to Spain.

Your basic question has been answered.  You renew your student visa in Spain.

Do not even be concerned about other people and their situation.  Best to be aware of your own situation and know when your card expires and when you have to call and make the appointment to renew.

So..... I just got back from my appointment AND it was not so nice!
Maybe everyone in the office was having a really bad day.
After being yelled at several times they finally stamped my paper and told me to wait 2 months for a letter in mail.  I'm not sure if I'll have to submit more information but here is what they requested of me today:

1. a copy of my passport, she didn't even look at my passport.
2. a copy of my current nie, front and back, and original.
3. the "beca" letter from the comunidad, original and copy.
4. copy of insurance card.... yes I know we don't have the new ones yet (1st thing I got yelled at about)
5. bank statements proving you were paid (2nd thing I got yelled at for) and no the letter from the comunidad isn't (or wasn't in my case) good enough for numbers 4&5.
6. form ex15 filled out plus a copy
7. the "certificate" from the comunidad saying you completed the program last year (she took my original even though I had 2 copies for her!!!)
8. 3 photos
9. you have to pay 16.32 euros, you have to pick up the form before your cita and pay it before your cita.... (and no your friends can't pick up the form for you... the security guard almost took me out for trying to take 2 forms for my friends).

hope this helps someone to have an easier time than I did

I've read through all the posts, but no one seems to have my situation.

I'm currently in my 2nd year in the program.
I renewed my NIE before the end of my first year (May 2010).
I received noticed in August 2010 that my renewal was denied because I didn't turn in my insurance policy for the second year.  So they gave me TWO months to turn it in.  When I turned it in, they said I would need to get a lawyer to turn the paperwork in for me.  So now I have a Spanish lawyer (who doesn't return my phone calls) and still an expired NIE.

Went home for Christmas and came back in January 2011.  Was told I couldn't enter the country because my NIE was expired.  After an hour of explanations, I was let go.

The question is: how do you RENEW an EXPIRED NIE when you are currently living in Spain?
Do I have to get another VISA from the States and go through the NIE process from start?

Any ideas/help would be appreciated!

Fun times at the NIE renewal office (which is now located-at least in my case-at Av. Padre Picquer 18, metro Campamento). Every year I get a different amount to ingresar-sometimes it´s 10.20 Euros, this time it was 16.32 (which, of course, you try to print out from the internet, and it´s impossible to find, so you have to do it on the spot like an earlier poster mentioned). I also had to photocopy the last six months of bank activity of my bank ´libreta,´ which I had, fortunately, updated at the bank before leaving for the appointment. Finally, I also got chewed out for not having information on expatriation (aka, what they do with your body if you die), even though it´s specifically written out in my letter for NIE renewal from my employer, apparently it is not mentioned in my actual MAPFRE insurance papers.

Finally, for family reasons, I am going home for spring break, and I was told I need to get an autorización de regreso, which I´ve been trying to ask for online, but apparently I need some form of número de expediente (I vaguely remember getting one in the past, but this time I wasn´t given anything back, except for a copy of the 16.32 Euro ingreso). Has anyone had to do this before, and what was their experience? I know I´ll have to pay some fee, turn in something at the comisaría nearest to where I am empadronada, and miss work again. Any input, ExpatCafésters?

Update: I thought it was weird that I only got back a blue copy of my tasa, and then remembered that they were supposed to give me a stamped copy of Ex. 11 back. Went to the office on Wed., the people looked through the piles and gave it to me. With that, I´ll be okay for my cita for the autorización de regreso at the end of the month.

Heads up to those of you who are travelling outside of Spain during spring break on expired NIE´s. Even if you carry your justificante de cita and your contract as proof, you can still get questioned if you try to re-enter the country with an expired NIE. To be on the safe side, get an autorización de regreso.

They only gave me the blue tasa also! Damn them, I also need a justificante. I've been waiting for 2 months for my NIE, and everytime I try to look for my status it tells me my data is incorrect. Even when I call. So I don't know what to do, does anyone know where to call and SPEAK to someone, I'm going absolutely crazy. I'll probably have to go to the freaking office. I hate Spanish bureaucracy!!!

silly question... Can I still renew my NIE even if my contract will be different for next year?
I finished my 2nd year and I'll be doing something else.  I'm assuming that I can renew my same NIE with my new contract.  Thanks!
