Recomonded DVD Movies
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:58:54 AM »
What DVD Movies do you recommend for students? I find that DVDs are a great way to build confidence in students but as a native speaker it's hard to tell what moves will be to tough for students (Maid in Manhattan comes to mind) so I thought it would be helpful to start a list of recommended DVDs. I'd really like new movies.

Good

Dr NO  (60's Sean Connery edition)
The Holiday
Hounds of Baskerville

Not Recomended

Maid in Manhattan  (way too much slang)  ???

I tell my students at the intermediate level and above that they should be watching the various TV series in English (the American & English series, that is). In this day and age of TDT and the possibility of seeing the programs in the original language, there is no excuse.

Likewise with watching DVDs. If they are new to the idea, I suggest that they watch a DVD that they are already familiar with....watch it in English with Spanish subtitles. I recommend that they watch films that way for a couple of weeks until they become comfortable and used to hearing the English language so intensely. Then I suggest that they switch to English subtitles in addition to the English audio. After a few months of watching the films that way I suggest that they fly solo and try and watch the film soley in English without any subtitles.

Perhaps before watching a full DVD, it's better to start them off with shorter videos and easier to understand language. Things like documentaries etc. National Geographic has a channel on YouTube and the audio is very clear and easy to follow...

Just my suggestions!

Generally I look for movies with minimal slang, generally the older ones are better.

So Far

Dr No (got this one for under 5 pounds delivered)
The Holiday some heavy slang but reasonably understandable
Jumanji with Robin Williams

Generally I find anything older is very easy for the students to understand, and I always run it with substitles. As well I have the students make notes of things they don't understand. As well wordreference.com has a lot of the slang and difficult words!
