Is age a barrier
« on: January 14, 2003, 10:24:00 AM »
Approaching 56 years of age. I have been a trainer in the Oil/Gas business for 20 years or so...spent some time over seas and I have degree.  On some contracts I taught trainees with a moderate English level and  had to enhance their English skills with respect to oil/Gas technology. I am now very interested in gaining a recognised qualification and then teach English in Spain.

Is my age a barrier for any prospective clients?

I would think your language skills in the oil/gas industry would be a huge asset. Are you British? If so, I\'d say go for it! As Spain desperately needs business-English teachers.

To be honest, I have heard that there is ageism is Spain---although I\'ve never seen anyone turned down because of age. Yet, there aren\'t many 45+ people in the field, but I have always associated this with the fact that 45+ are settled, whereas most people teaching English in SPain (coming from US or Britain) are unsettled and just planning on staying a year.

If I were you and had a very positive attitude, I\'d vacation there for a month in say, September, and try to get some interviews. See what happens. AND LET US KNOW!!!!!!

Good luck! And remember to push the "business" lingo! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif\"] [addsig]

I don\'t know specifically in the teaching field of spain, but there is definite age descrimination in Spain. My mother in law is 53 and is constantly concerned that they will ask her to take early retirement so they can hire a 25 year old to do her job Office administration) for less money. She has been with this company for about 25 years and told me it\'s not the thought of losing her job that scares her, it\'s the fact that people would rather hire a young person and train them than hire an experienced person and pay them.
