Anyone else Hispanic?
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:46:07 AM »
Hey Guys,

I know this may be weird to ask, but is anyone else Hispanic??  I'm a first generation American (half Peruvian and half Puerto Rican) and am unsure if I am also a minority in this setting as well.  I'm just trying to get a feeling about some of the reasons other Hispanics would like to participate in this program, so if you wouldn't mind sharing some details I think we could all gain a little insight on one another.

Good question,

Well, I can speak for two ladies that I worked with, who were both from Puerto Rico.  They chose to do the program because they studied here before and came back to study again while doing the program.   they both like living in Madrid and saw the NALCA program as a way to come back to Spain.

I am also a minority in this setting as well.

It's not just Hispanics that are minorities in this program, but African-Americans as well.  I am an African-American, 38 and am in the higher age range of Language Assistants.  Language Assistants tend to be younger and fresh out of college with little teaching experience and many come to Spain because they like it and want t take advantage of living abroad.

So, in the end, your question wasn't weird at all.

Cheers,

Shawn

My boyfriend is Hispanic (Second generation Mexican) and has applied for the program. He's in his 30s too, so you're not alone Shawn! I'm mixed Asian/Caucasian, and in my mid-20s. Anyway, we both want to come to Spain because we've always wanted to spend extended time in Europe, and we are both students of Spanish -- so it seemed like the logical place to go :)

Based on the Facebook group for the program it looks like a good percentage of Language Assistants have Hispanic heritage... it makes sense, because of the common language!  Like you, my boyfriend was born and raised in the US. He speaks limited "house Spanish", so he's eager to improve his speaking skills.

Hey,

I'm half Nicaraguan and also Spanish (from the Basque country).

I'm 21. I was born in San Francisco, and grew up there, but I have been in Idaho since I was 15.

(Yes I do like it here more.)

Great to see this thread take off.  Let's not just limit it to Hispanics, but other minorities as well.

Cheers,

Shawn

I am half spanish and moving to Galicia to live with my dad this July after graduating college. I was born in La Coruña and grew up there until moving to the states in second grade. That's why I thought this was the perfect opportunity!

Hola a todos!
I am first generation Mexican. Born in Mexico and grew up in California then moved to Iowa.
I think that it will be interesting living in Spain as a Latina. The experience is definitely going to be interesting! :)

I'm half panamanian, other half carribean. When I studied in Spain it took some time to get used to the accents of some people but for the most part it was cool. I spoke a bit better as opposed to the "house spanish" that I spoke before.

Very Excited to go back :-)

Hello!

I am a "black girl" African American for all those politically correct.
I am from Minnesota, but went to Howard University in Washington DC.
I studied International Business, but I never had the opportunitiy to study
abrod. I love new cultures and the spanish laanguage...Although I would
not by any stretch of the imagination consider myself fluent.

I have been placed in Sevilla. Will anyone else be in Sevilla??

Look forward to hearing from you all. It is relieving to hear of more minorities participating in the program...

With Love,

Cher

Hey,

I haven't been accepted (or even applied yet), but I just wanted to give my saludos. I'm a Black American from Ohio, went to school in Ohio and studied International Relations.

If any of you have blogs or anything, I would love to read them!

Me and my twin sister are thinking about applying and would love to read about the experiences of other people of color in Spain!

I'm Hispanic! My parents are from Mexico and I was born in Austin but raised in Houston. I joined this program because I thought it would be a neat experience to work abroad. I love to travel and to learn about different cultures so thought this program would be good for me...oh, and I love working with kids!
