What are the expectations of my spanish knowledge when I arrive? I took 2 years in High School but really only remember the basic stuff. I have rosetta stone so i was going to crunch before I got there and watch lots of spanish TV but i'm just concerned about my ability to hold a conversation and how that would affect me in the classroom environment.

As far as the school as the work envirnment is concerned, you are here to speak English in the classroom. You will have to speak Spanish with other teachers on staff who don't teach English and who don't speak it, but other than that, you are not coming to Spain to WOW or IMPRESS anyone with your knowledge of Spanish.

When you are outside of the school and trying to get things done, a working knowledge of Spanish helps and even your language skills will improve every time that you practice it. Come here with a foundation that will start you speaking and particiapting in conversations.

i know it's a bit early, but what is the renewal process for the Auxiliar program? I'm more than convinced that two years experience instead of one will look better on any job/graduate application, so if there's a lengthy process I'd like to get started

It's not a lengthy process to renew like it is when you first applied.  Most important, do a good job so that your school will recommend you for a second year. This year's 2nd timers needed to write in Spanish bascially telling why you want to do the program. You needed another medical clearance from Spain. You needed another application to renew which will be easier because some of your info is already on file, but your deadline is later then first timers. You will also get to choose another region if you want to switch. Any of this info can change for next year, and the program will get in touch with you about renewing. there was a minimum of info in the manual on the program's website for renewing so check  it when the application comes online again. It's not something you need to spend much time on or start  until early Spring/late winter.

I just got placed in Madrid and I was soooo excited, until I realized that I have zero things done for the visa. Can anyone tell me how long it took to get their placement letter for Madrid? The New York consulate has very few appointment slots (one tomorrow and none for 2 weeks) and I want to get on it ASAP. Any information about the process would be greatly appreciated!!!

Don't worry AT all about the New York Consulate, they processed some people's visas in two weeks, mine was done in four. And if you're late, you're late, the program will completely understand that you got placed late in the game.

Follow the instructions as per website on the NY Consulate page, make copies of everything and bring the copies and originals to your appointment. give them the copies. They're very nice (especially the guy from window number 2, with the glasses) and they'll ask you when you're leaving, probably to try and process it before that time.

Good luck~

Thanks Nedra!  That is definitely a little relieving  :)

Just one last question, is anyone from Pennsylvania?  I'm trying to get my Criminal Record Check and it seems that Pennsylvania (Harrisburg) is weeks behind on getting out the notarized copies.  Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to expedite this?  I want to make it to Spain for the orientation but this document might hold me up  :(

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I've got a question of a more serious nature. Some personal/family issues have recently come up in my life, and I am now in a position where I  need to re-evaluate my priorities. I'm wondering if anyone with experience (Shawn, etc.) could help me understand the consequences of renouncing my position this late in the process. Also, if I do decide to stick with the program and eventually realize I need to leave, what are the consequences in that situation?

I'm sorry to even be re-considering, but I need to know my options since these issues have arisen.

Thanks de antemano,
Carrie

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has advice regarding property or renter's insurance while in Spain? I am mostly just concerned about insuring my laptop and camera in case of theft/damage/etc. Someone told me about Safeware, which provides international coverage for electronics, but I got a free quote and it seemed so pricey.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Has anyone who was accepted late (last week) received their placement letter yet? I want to leave for Spain on the 20th or before but I haven't even been apply to start my visa process yet because I still don't have my letter. Any suggestions about whether I should email about it or anything I can do?!

Thanks!

How do you cash your check? do you have to get a bank account in Madrid or should I get it here in the US?

My region pays by direct deposit, as do most I would imagine. You will find that having a Spanish bank account is a very good decision.

Where do I send my visa application? I live in colorado. I have not yet received my acceptance letter and was offered the position about 3 weeks ago for the madrid region. I've sent emails to just about everybody in the manual regarding the application but everybody says they're not the right people to send it to.

I must say i'm frustrated and concerned about getting this paperwork done in time to make the beginning of the october.

I'm in the same position as you.  I also got placed about three weeks ago to Madrid.  I emailed Magdalena.custodio@madrid.org.  That was the right email.  She wrote me back saying that they need time to do the paperwork on her end.  I emailed her a couple days after receiving the Madrid placement and she wrote back the next day, however, I followed up and never heard back.  I also emailed leticia.moreno@madrid.org to try to get a response but heard nothing from her.

Trust me, I'm also frustrated.  I'm pretty sure there's nothing we can do until they send us our letters.  As far as your visa, I'm not sure.  I live in Pennsylvania and my consulate is in New York.  I talked to a guy there the day I got my placement and he just told me to have everything else ready and come immediately once I get my papers.  New York has few appointment slots and I'll need one, however, I'm just gonna call the morning of, go and hope for the best.

I hope some of the above information is helpful.  I definitely understand where you're coming from - so frustrating that it's all out of our hands.  Keep me posted and send me a message if you get your letter and I'll do the same.

Hey all,

Just a quick question: I had my Boston visa appointment 1 month ago today, and I've been wondering how (or if) the consulate is going to contact me when my visa's ready.  Do they call?  Send an email?  Send something to your house?  I've emailed and called the consulate, but no one answers the phones, and no one responds to emails.

Also, can they send the visa to you in the mail?  I'm back at home in Ohio and don't wanna have to go back through Boston.   Any bostoners have any advice on how I might be able to figure out the status of my visa?

They gave me a paper with instructions on how to check the status, but I think I lost it.  I'm an idiot.

Thanks!

Carrie,

It saddens me to hear about your situation and I can't tell you what to do but let me ask you some questions. What's important to you at this moment? How does your family fit into the picture? Do you feel that you can do the job 100% if you are mentally back in the States, but physically here in Spain?

Take time and answer these question and draw your own conclusions.

Suerte,

Shawn

I finally received my letters. I have been placed at the Colegio Laura García Noblejas y Brunet in Villaviciosa de Odón just outside Madrid. I'm excited about the opportunity.

I found out that I have to submit my visa paper work to my contacts at the Los Angeles Office of Education for Spain. They will work with the consulate to get my visa application processed.

Does anybody know what the commute is like between downtown Madrid and Villaviciosa de Odon? I'm just wondering how long it would take to do the trip if I ended up living downtown. I've also heard there is a Facebook page. Does anybody know the name of the group?

Thanks for all you're help!

This may be an odd question, but how many suitcases are you all bringing? I have never packed for 8 months abroad. I have two large suitcases (28") that I had planned on bringing (that way I have some room to bring stuff back). But thinking of the hassle of carrying two large suitcases on the metro (how does one even accomplish this?), getting to the hostel, etc. etc., has given me some pause lately.

Can anyone weigh in on the luggage situation?

Many thanks!

So -- my husband and I are interested in applying for the North American Language and Cultural Assistantship in Spain for
next year.    We've been to the website and realize it's not opened up yet...but have created a profile and are starting to
gather up our documentation.  Here's my question to anyone out there who's been in the program.  Anyone done it...doing it
who's in the "over 40 years old" category?  Any families that have done it?  We realize that the salary is very low for an
older professional, or a family, yet think we have the means to pull it off.

We'd love to hear from you.  Thanks!

I just received my visa back in the mail however it says valid from October 1, 2010 until January 1, 2010 - 90 days.  Is this right?!  I made it very clear what I was doing but I thought that the visa was for 9 months or so?

Anyone know if this is right?!

Thanks!

This is absolutley correct. Once you get to Spain, you have to apply to extend the visa past 3 months. It's a very easy process. You will be gettig a student card.

I have another question, but slightly compounded.  I'm 49 and my husband is 54.  We'd like to apply to and are trying to find out whether or not we will, or will not be accepted based on age.

Also, does anyone know how the college degree/transcript portion is reviewed?  If one had attended local community colleges and acquired a couple of degrees (many years ago), does anyone know how this might be evaluated?  (in other words, if the diploma doesn't say "Bachelors of whatever", is that a problem?)

Just apply, as far as the age thing is concerned. Let the program decide if you are qualified or not.

As far as requirements go, it specifically asks for a Bachelor's degree, but I would still apply.

I know quite a few people who are 40+ in the program, so it shows that people in that age range can get in as well.

Hola everyone! I am going to apply for the 2011-2012 year (ahh, can't wait until they post the new application), and I have been reading these boards for over an hour, wowww. Some questions I would REALLY appreciate your help with:

1) Is it best to send in professor recommendations by snail mail? If so, can I send all those required docs in one big envelope?
2) How long does it take after submitting your application to hear back? Do people hear back on a rolling basis? If I send in my application in Janary, will I still not find out about acceptance until May?
3) Do you find out that you were accepted much earlier than you find out your placement? If so, how long do you have to wait to find out your placement?

Thanks so much!!

1) Unless things have changed, you must send in the Profex part of the application online, and then submit all documents by mail (including police report, recommendations, etc.) in one big envelope.

2) Everyone hears at once. Yes, you'll be waiting to hear about your fate until May.
To be honest, if you can't wait like that you might want to re-think life in Spain - things can get really frustrating here if you're not comfortable with the system (waiting, occasional paperwork runarounds, frustrating experiences with government offices, etc.)

3) When you're accepted into the program, you'll see what comunidad autonoma you received. Then, depending on your comunidad, you may wait a weeks or months to see what specific town you'll be in.

Good luck! Just remember to get your application in ASAP.

No hay de que!

Good luck with your final year. Again, I urge you to get your application in as soon as humanly possible if you are set on going to Spain. Take advantage of the fact that you are able to register with Profex and create your CV to get a head start.

One more question: do you get your number based on when you submitted your Profex materials, not when they received your hard copy materials? Gracias, otra vez!

Yes, your number comes from your profex application.

However, I'm unsure whether or not you need to scan and attach the documents asked for in the profex application (eg. doctor's note). Maybe someone who has been through the initial profex application process more recently can give you the definite answer.

I would love to hear more from the North American Language and Culture Assistants that are 40+...
Also, any married folks/partners?  Anyone doing this as a family?

Next question -- I read from somewhere here that their 90-day
visa was from Oct. 1 - Jan. 1.  If a person wanted to go over earlier (i.e., to travel, to study Spanish, etc.) before the
orientation or start date -- is that possible?  Does one need to specify somewhere either on the application, or at some later
date (for example, if my husband and I were selected into the program, we'd want to travel to Spain a couple of months
earlier -- let's say in July or early August).

I applied in January of this year and am currently in Madrid, Spain! I sent in my electronic application before I even had my doctor's note or police clearance in hand. Where it asked for those documents, I simply attached a Word document stating that I will be sending those through snail mail. All you need to do on the electronic application is check off the fact that you are in good health and have no criminal record.

Hope this helps!

Hi everyone! I have been offered a late assignment, and I have a couple of questions about the visa application….I'll be applying at the New York consulate, if that helps with any of this.

1. My medical record is from the spring when I applied and had to send this documentation in for the program. I read something that it has to be dated within 90 days of your departure? Do I have to get another from my doctor that is more recent?

2. Do any of the documents need to be translated into Spanish? I checked the website and did not see this mentioned at all, but I've read previously about some consulates requiring some documents to be translated.

3. The only document that must be apostilized is the police record, which does not pertain to me now because the NY consulate started requiring the FBI check.

Any help will be appreciated!!

Hola amors,

I believe I have made a mistake on my application and ranked my groups correctly but didn't include a region. I have a very low inscrita number (under 100) and am wondering if it is possible to change such an error.

All advice is welcome.

Gracias,
-Michaela

I also applied at the NY consulate.

About the doctor's note - I think you'll be fine since it was within 90 days when you applied and I believe that is the guideline. But if you can it'd definitely put your mind at ease if you could get an updated one.

You do not need anything translated into Spanish. I'm not sure where that rumor started but it simply is not true for the NY consulate, or the Andalucia and Baleric Island Extranjeria Offices.

When I applied (June) only the police record needed to be apostile'd...but you should ask the NY Consulate directly about any doubts on that because they were in the process of changing their policy.

Suerte!

Hi there.  My wife and I are doing this as a married couple.  It's been pretty great so far.  Just make sure to apply as early as possible, that way you can get placed in schools close to each other.  We just sent along an extra letter with our application requesting that we be placed as close as possible.  They will oblige as long as there are slots available (which is why it is imperative that you apply as soon as possible).

Also, you can be in Spain for up to 90 days as a tourist.  I would try to find out if you can show up early, use some of those 90 days as "tourists", then have your student visa kick in during the September timeframe.
