Proving to Spaniards I went to a legitimate university
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:57:09 PM »
Muy buenas!

I've started to look for more formal work in Spain, and thus have started looking into the process of officially recognizing (er, "the homologar-ation" of) my degree. For any of those of you who have survived the job hunt or masters program hunt, have you found that both your transcript and your diploma were necessary to have legalized?

And if there's any Canadians kicking around, let me know how the process went for you. Unfortunately, I can't just get the easy Apostille as I would've been able to had I attended an American university.

Best wishes to all, and hope the Halloween week lessons are going well!

Halydia, you must have all of your diplomas, transcripts and apostilles translated, and by a sworn translator, in order to turn them in to begin the process of homologación.

Check with the Canadian Embassy too (do they have something like the British Council?) I've been told my degree is unlikely to be recognised at the moment so it's not worth all the expense of the translations etc until Bolonia comes into force next year. Get some info before you fork out money!

Good thinking. Thank you for your help! Bolonia sure seems to be throwing just about everything off, no?

The Bologna Process is the process that the countries of the EU are currently going through to make university education across the member states equitable...bringing all of the different degrees and titles inline with each other to facilitate cross union studies, etc.

You can read more about it here: http://www.ond.vlaanderen.be/hogeronderwijs/bologna/

The nice thing about it is that they are now establishing 4 year degrees here in Spain (the licenciatura is a 5 year degree) which will make convalidating the US bachelor's degrees a much easier and more straightfoward process..

Degrees in most of Britain are three years, occasionally four. The British Council think, but can't confirm, that after Bologna, Spain will recognise British BAs as being equivalent to Spanish licenciaturas. Hope so!

I spoke to a student that had done a 5-year degree in journalism. Most of it was on the history of printing and newspapers - the history of newspapers in Prussia and Asia, for example. So just because a degree is 5 years long, doesn't mean it's any good. What use is printing in Prussia to a journalist? I've been a journo for nigh on 20 years and I haven't a scooby when newspapers started in bloody Prussia!!
