Teaching in schools/universities????
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:06:58 PM »
Can anyone tell me if a guiri can teach in a state institution, such as a university or a school? The idea of doing my oposicion and settling down properly really appeals. I have a BA (Hons) in English with History (a 2:1) and have been teaching for four years now. Is it possible without some formal teaching degree outwith the TEFL? Madrid is going crazy for bilingual schools, yet the teachers are not the best, shall we say!

Anyone have any info?

xx

PS Life made getting time on forums practically impossible, put it's nice to be back in the cafe again. Still good cafe con leche!

Hi again Lizzie,

Only those with Spanish nationality can sit the opposition exams. The opposition exams are to work in government positions...including public schools (auxiliary program aside).

However, there are plenty of private universities and schools that will hire foreigners. It's just a question of applying!!

Good luck!

Thanks, but actually EU residents are applicable for the oposicion too, and their spouses. It's just for the armed forces that only Spaniards are applicable.

I'm trying to find out if my degree is suitable or if it is an explicit teaching degree that is needed. Search goes on!!!

But interesting about the private universities. I'm used to them all being public in the UK. I'll be trying!!!!!

Oh, ok, on one oposicion notice it also has:

Estar en posesión del Título de Maestro o el Título de Grado correspondiente.

So do you think that means: teaching title (profesional, like the BEd) or the corresponding under-grad degree???? In which case, a degree in English should cut it????

Hi Lizzie,

Wow! You sure have opened my eyes to something that I have been mistaken on. I have always been told that only Spanish nationals can sit the oppositions.

However, according to what you have posted, not only can you sit the exams for being from an EU member state, but I can as well being married to a Spaniard. Good to know.

Do you have the link to the site where you pulled that info from handy? It would be great if you could post it here.

One other thing you might try looking into is having your studies convalidated (homologado). It might make the process of the oppositions easier....

Just a thought.

As for me, have been busy (as usual) managing the Café, running my business and of course raising my son...bilingually. A very cool process indeed.

Anyway, post the link when you get the chance, OK?

Thanks tons,

Rebecca

I got it from (one of the oposiciones details on this):
http://www.emagister.com/oposiciones-convocatorias/oposicion-profesor-educacion-secundaria-varios-oposconv-16616.htm#programa

This also looks interesting:
http://www.oposiciones.de/

Think I´ll give it a go.

And yup, you foreigners (tee hee) can sit them too, being married to a cool European!

A bilingual child - that's what I like to hear.

Anyway, would be great to meet for a cana at some point if you're interested. I've been too long away!
