Cell phone activation
« on: December 29, 2002, 09:29:00 PM »
I will be in Nerja (Costa del Sol) for 3 months this winter (2003) and want to activate my tri-mode, unlocked cell phone with a local prepay SIM card.

The ones I see on the web range from 65E up to 95E depending on the amount of prepaid time on the card.

Does anyone know of a less expensive SIM card (activation), possibly with very little prepaid time?  and are they readily available?

I have visited the Telefonica Movistar Activa website and although it is entirely in Spanish, I was able to decipher most of it and found no email address for questions nor any mention of SIM (smart) cards.

I would really appreciate any information anyone can give me regarding this.  I am leaving Canada Jan. 23.

thank you

If you are sure the cell you got is going to work within Spain, then you have no probs. Get one vodafon prepaid card (SIM) for 30 euros. Can\'t get one for less from vodafon. The site of vodafon in Spain is [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.airtel.es.\" target=\"_blank\"]www.airtel.es.[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --] I myself have been using them since i got in Spain. Don\'t talk much though, i mean their rates seems normal, but once you start talking, you run out of credit for no time.

If you have more questions or whatever let me know......Vodafon sux though. I heard Amena is offering the cheapest service out there. There are three OPs within Spain, vodafon, amena i movistar. (as i know)

c\'ya and happy holiday seasson.

I know that you said that you have a phone already, but Vodafone has some great deals going on right now.  You can by a cheap phone for €59 and get 60€ if minutes for free.  You of course get more minutes if you buy the phone that costs €89.  It´s by far the best deal that I´ve seen since I´ve been here.  You may want to check with them to see if they have specials on activating your phone.[addsig]

Try asking Jeremy, too, at [!-- BBCode Start --][A HREF=\"http://www.multimadrid.com\" TARGET=\"_blank\"]MultiMadrid.com[/A][!-- BBCode End --] He runs a great cell phone biz and may be able to help.

Hey beebee, cheaper SIM card setup is not possible as far as I know. As Tracy said, I do have a cell rental service and sell SIMs, my Movistar SIM goes for $95 with $60 in prepaid calling credit, very reasonably priced by any standard. You can get more info on [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.onspanishtime.com/web/sim.htm\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.onspanishtime.com/web/sim.htm[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --] although you have probably already seen it.

dimiterv, as long as it is a triband legally acquired phone it will work with the Movistar SIMs. Vodafone and Amena SIMs could give problems however as they are not as quality and hence cheaper and riskier.

Vodafone is decent but is the second rate carrier between Movistar (best) and Amena (worse).  See coverage comparisons at [!-- BBCode auto-link start --][a href=\"http://www.onspanishtime.com/web/coverage_comparison.htm\" target=\"_blank\"]www.onspanishtime.com/web/coverage_comparison.htm[/a][!-- BBCode auto-link end --] . If you are going to be in main cities and towns you can get any of the SIMs but for smaller villages and mountain areas, go with Movistar for the best coverage.

Yes, the Vodafone deals mentioned bt dkmarsh are great but they will not last much after January 6th (The Epiphany here) [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif\"] and it is a bit of a waste to buy another cell if you already have one.
