Authroization to work
« on: July 23, 2008, 06:58:53 PM »
I'm in Spain on a Student visa (originally from the USA) and was thinking of adding an authorization to work... the process doesn't look too hard, as long as I find an employer willing to hire me.  Here's my question though.... do I have to have my US university degree "homologado" in order to get an authorization to work as an English teacher in Spain or is that not generally necessary (my degree is in the teaching of foreign languages with a concentration in Spainsh)?  If I understand things correctly, getting a degree "homologado" is more of a necessity for people like doctors and lawyers who want to work in Spain... if I just want to work in a small language school a few hours a week while I'm studying abroad, do I need to do the whole "homologar" thing?

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Chris,

No, you do not need to get your degree homologado.  That is for people who want to take the civil servant exam to be an English teacher in a public schoo,l as well as for the people that you have mentioned in your post.

As far as working in a small language school is concerned, many of them will just accept your student visa and still pay you under the table.  Some will want you to have you work papers in order.  Just send your CV, with your NIE in bold print so that they can see that you are here legally, and see what happens.

Suerte,

Shawn

Thanks for the info, Shawn... I'm hoping to do things the legal way, so hopefully I'll find a school that will be willing to help me get the authorization to work.

No problem at all.  Good luck in your search for that academy that will help you do things in the legal way.  Just be up front and let them know that you are doing the English Language Assistant program and that you are here legally on a student visa.  Honesty is the best policy.

Please report back and let us know what happens.
