Can't return to Spain!? No Me Digas!
« on: December 15, 2002, 06:20:00 PM »
A friend of mine who spent time studing in Ireland recently told me that if I plan to live in Spain illegal, when I do finally decide to return to the US, Spainsh immigration will simply tell me not to return to the country anywhere from 1 to 5 years!  This would be horrible! I was not planning to study at a university, but may have to go that way to get a student visa.

Any feedback on this one?   [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_psychotic.gif\"] [addsig]

To be perfectly honest, this doesn\'t make any sense. If you are there working illegally and Spanish immigration doesn\'t know you are there, how would they know when you leave? Even if they do find out you are leaving they aren\'t going to care. And furthermore, if you are living and working there illegally, what is the problem with you returning to visit illegally? My suggestion is that you find a way to get legal in Spain. The problem with a student visa is you probably would not get a work permit.[addsig]

you have nothing to worry about.  especially if you´re american.  i know it sounds a little backwards and egocentric, but if you come from the most powerful and wealthy country in the world, the authorities will probably feel less threatened by the possibility of you staying and trying to work illegally in the long run becaue you could make more money back home.

as for me myself, i plan on working "under the table" and roughing it for the simple reason that my recent move to barcelona is only temporary and not permanent or long-term.  all i want is the experience of living abroad for a year in a country with a different culture and language.  if you plan on coming over for the long run or permantly, it would be wise to find a legal way.[addsig]

Your friend\'s scenario refers to illegals when they get caught working illegally, not when they are trying to go home. Getting caught is more a reality nowadays then it was a while ago, but the trick is to work in the field. I.e. be a traveling teacher, sent out on a teaching job. This is what most institutes and academies do anyway. And it\'s virtually impossible to track down people who aren\'t even registered as being employees.

I don\'t want to sound like a proponent of illegal work [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif\"] but I believe there\'s a different cultural perspective on working under the table in Spain, and other countries than in the US. I also STRONGLY believe that many people who love SPain and want to live there, have no other choice as far as starting out is concerned. SOmetimes you have to work under-the-table for awhile in order to be hired and become LEGAL. It\'s a catch 22 and sometimes a risk is necessary.[addsig]

OK. FInding a teaching job in Barcelona has gotten to be dicey, so I have been hurling my resume all over Europe in search of a job. I have a lead in Rome to teach. Can anyone give me any insight into academies there? I would prefer to remain in Barcelona but I can\'t sit around forever.[addsig]

Here is a link from ESL Cafe where people have posted about their experiences in Italy.  Take them with a grain of salt and remember that we can learn from everyones\' experiences.
