Peanutbutter!
« on: January 29, 2008, 04:46:07 PM »
Hello Everyone,

OK, I know...some version of peanutbutter can be found here in Madrid. But I have never been convinced by the name "Capitán Maní" for this sinful American byproduct.

Well, this morning I was walking the aisles of the Hipercor in Sanchinarro when to my surprise alongside the "Capitán Maní" sat both the creamy and crunchy varieties of Peter Pan peanutbutter. I, personally, am a Jif fan, but beggars can't be choosers!

Just thought I would share!

Hey Rebecca,

The secret to finding CHEAP peanut butter in Madrid is hitting up the Asian stores, as peanut butter is used in Tai food and other asian dishes.

You can get jars in the Chinese supermarket in the Plaza España parking garagae next to El Chino De Plaza España for around 2 Euros

I'm totally a JIF girl myself, but I think Peter Pan has a very similar taste.  My roommate said that Peter Pan is common in NY.

PS What do you eat your peanut butter with.  I'm not a huge fan of the celery deal, but bananas are good, and especially carrots.  Got any other ideas??

I've tried the asian brand and I threw it away..... it was dry and a weird color and the texture was gross... just sayin!
I just bought the Mercadona (LOVE Mercadona!) brand and its ooookay.... its not as sweet or creamy as Peter Pan.  I'm a 100% JIF girl BUT I settle for Peter Pan (:
My mom sent me grape jelly so I'm lucky but I also enjoy it with bananas on toast.  I've even brought it to work and my Spanish coworkers have been curious enough to try it out.

Ever since I discovered the peanut butter machine at my local grocery coop, I don't think I could ever go back to any of the commercial brands of over-sugared stuff they call "peanut butter."  I don't remember how expensive whole peanuts are in Spain, but if you have access to a food processor you will be in heaven!
