Dilemma - Does the value of a CELTA diminish if its a year old?
« on: January 05, 2008, 09:27:55 PM »
Dear everyone,
I've just come back to the UK from Barcelona having taken the CELTA qualification from International House.
I was really happy doing the course, and I realised if I gave it a go I would make a damn good teacher.

However due to certain circumstances, it seems that I'm now unable to go away and teach until 2009.
Which means staying in the UK. Ultimately, I may have to postpone teaching until then.
How do schools and employers look upon it if when they see my CV they realise the CELTA is a year old.

Will my hard gotten CELTA be worthless?

Thoughts and views hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Definitely not. You'll be completely fine. I once had a colleague who'd started teaching 15 years after getting her certificate (!)

Thanks for the reassurance. If that's the case. Then I'm keen to get a few months teaching experience in the bag. So that's what I'll do. Then I can bank on that and my CELTA to hopefully get me a job abroad if I feel the urge, at some point in the future.

Hey Simpler,
perhaps just to keep you skills fresh you could volunteer with immigrants in your home country until you become a full-fledged teacher in 2009! You don't always have to make a huge hourly commitment but I am sure that there would be organizations really interested in what you have to offer, and not to mention what you'll gain by the practice teaching!
