Big Changes!

Hello Friends!

It has been awhile and I wanted to take this opportunity to first, apologize for the website being down for the past several days and second to welcome you to the new and improved Expatriate Café.

Surely some of you experienced some frustration over the past couple of days as you may have tried to connect with our page only to discover that it was offline. Unfortunately we had (and continue to have) problems with our hosting company and have been forced to change things around a bit. When the site first went off line a few days ago Tony immediately contacted our hosting company both via email and phone...but to no avail. They still have not responded to email nor phone contacts  .

Nevertheless, we have taken advantage of the situation to update the website and offer you a fresher, cleaner interface. You will find that it isn't that much different from the old format. However, I do encourage you to check out the new features and let us know if there is anything that you are having trouble with. For the most part we have worked out most of the kinks and bugs but still have some minor tweaking to do. If there is something that you see that needs attention, by all means please let us know!

Apart from these changes, more and bigger changes are to come! All exciting I can guarantee you! So, be sure to check back frequently as we will make announcement of the new changes as they are implemented!

I haven't been around for awhile so was surprised to read about the site being offline. But it looks GREAT now (well, it looked great before...but even better now)!

My hat's off to you guys! Although you have sparked my curiosity....what other changes are forthcoming???

Please allow me to issue a very public thanks to Mr. Rebecca for a technical consult that really got us over the hump this past week. I guess I should thank Rebecca herself for loaning him to the café and letting him go to sleep a bit later than normal for a day or two! 

I'm confident you'll all agree that the wait was well worth it.

Hello Expat Teacher!

Nice to see you back here!

Hmmmm...curiosity killed the cat! But then again, satisfaction brought him back...

What changes are on the horizon you ask? Well, for starters, I suggest you check out the new calendar function on the tabs running across the top of the forum.

We have also just added three new forum boards: Day life, Nightlife and Student life in Spain.

You have been here for many years now, I expect that you would have a lot to contribute to some of these boards! 

Ahhh, but that is not all...even more changes will be coming in the near future so keep your eyes peeled!

We are doing an informal survey of the new changes to the site.

What most interests us now is how quickly the website loads compared to the old site. If you could take a few seconds to share your input it would be really really appreciated.

We have changed providers to one located in Europe (France), so particularly for those connecting from the USA and other non-European countries, how do you see the load time?

Had a problem registering with Internet Explorer 6.0. Tried for for a few days but could not submit my registration. The 'register' button could not be activated/clicked on.

Switched to Firefox and had no problem. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to take a moment to welcome Janice Haywood to the Expatriate Café! Janice is a colleague of mine and the Director of Windsor Idiomas located in the Mirasierra neighborhood of Madrid.

Janice has recently started a blog that gives the flip side of English teaching in Madrid. The academy perspective.

Here at the Expatriate Café we try to give perspective on the English teaching profession in Spain from a variety of sources and opinions, not just one person. Business by Janice, Janice's blog, brings a whole other perspective to the teaching profession here. After working through several technical challenges, we were finally able to bring you Janice's blog via RSS feed to our front page.

If you are seriously thinking about coming to teach in Spain, I highly encourage you to visit her blog as it tells the untold story of the challenges that academies face as well.

I consider Janice to be a breath of fresh air in the profession as she walks the walk, not just talks the talk. She is all about offering quality service to her clients, professional support to her teaching staff and running a transparent and ethical business. Not only that, but she is spearheading efforts to get academies to communicate and work together.

Just read Janice's blog and boy, was I blown away.  The sheer perspective of what she has to say, was out of this world.  She is talking to the SERIOUS English teacher and not backpackers.

Give her blog a read and you too will be amazed at what she has to say and by her professional background.
