trying to learn Spanish
« on: December 03, 2002, 06:13:00 PM »
Hi everyone,

I know I\'ve addressed this before (at least I think I have  [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif\"] )  Anyway, I\'ve narrowed it down to two schools for intensive Spanish courses...Don Quijote and International House... I\'ve been in touch with both, have received the brochures, gotten price quotes...what I really want to know however, is what former students thought or have to say about either school.  I am looking to pursue the Basic Certificate (DELE) in Spanish (obviously) and I\'m just not sure which way to go....anyone have any advise on this?  It would be greatly appreciated.

Gracias,

Michelle [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif\"] [addsig]

[IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif\"] ...heads I go to IH, tails I go to don quijote....and the winner is....IH....ok well it\'s going to cost a chunk o\' change....but they have an eight week intensive course to prepare you for DELE certification no matter what your level of Spanish is....I\'m signing up for the course beginning September 15th to take the test in November....I\'ll keep ya\'ll posted [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif\"]

Michelle,

The only advice I have for you is to watch out for what level of D.E.L.E. you take.  There is Inicial, Basico y Avanzado.  The names are misleading because the Advanced really means bi-lingual, basico really means advanced and inicial is more like a basic knowledge.  I minored in Spanish and concentrated in grammar with taking an outside course plus speaking to my gf in spanish and the Basico was a bit difficult in certain areas.  The D.E.L.E. exam, because of it being produced in Spain has a MAJOR tendency to focus on expressions from Spain and even Spanish geography!  In addition to these aspects the questions can be somewhat difficult as well.  But being you\'re going to study at a school in Spain you should have no problem!

YOu can even take some practice questions if you go to the main website for Instituto Cervantes becuase they are the main organization that administers the test worldwide.   [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_beer.gif\"] [addsig]

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the advice and explaining the different levels.  I wouldn\'t have known which test to aim for.

Muchas Gracias, [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_beer.gif\"]

Hi Michelle,

I would definitely go with Don Quijote. They are very well known for teaching SPanish. That\'s their bag. IH, however, is a bit more global. I would choose the former.
