Help on possible move to Barcelona
« on: December 03, 2002, 11:34:00 AM »
Hello everyone. I hope i can get some advice from some people here with experience of moves to Spain. My situation is that i am a Student in Ireland, i live in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I have a Spanish girlfriend in Barcelona and i am looking into possibilities of moving there.

I have the possibility of going to Barcelona on my "placement" year, or my "year out" of University to work or study. This would not be until the year 2004/05. I feel that i cannot wait that long. I was recently there and fell in love with it. I have seen another post from someone who wants to go to Spain in order to be with their girlfriend. I understand i must complete my studies, but i feel that i cannot stay here without my girlfriend for that long. I feel so much the need to get out of this country and just start fresh over  there.

I see that there are a lot of Americans here, i hope i am not the only Irish person over there! I am looking for advice on avenues i could look into about going over there. I would be happy to study at an institution over there, or work, or both. I am an EU citizen and understand this helps. I am just wondering what sort of things i have to take into consideration about going over there. Would it be easy for me to enrol at a College or University in Spain, or to get temporary work of some sort? I am in the process of learning Spanish and feel that if i went there i could take an intensive course and get to grips with the language as soon as possible.

I look forward to anyone who can give me some advice on this. I feel very strongly about this and my mind is almost completely set on going, i just feel the need to go there and be with my girlfriend. But its not only for that. I need a new start and some sort of direction in my life. I appreciate any help you can give me, regards,

I wouldn\'t count on both. Spanish Universities are very intensive, very involved, and very competitive. And no, you won\'t be the only Irish person there.

Also, take into account that Catalan is THE language of Barcelona. Almost everyone will speak to you in Spanish because they know you are a foreigner, but will respect you more if you learn some Catalan and a bit about the culture.
