Jobs in Sevilla
« on: December 03, 2002, 07:27:00 AM »
Hello,

I have read about many job offerings in Madrid and Barcelona.  I visited Sevilla a few years ago and fell in love.  What are the possibilities of finding jobs teaching English in Sevilla, or in a small town such as San Sebastian.  Has anyone had any luck in these areas of the country?

Much Thanks!

I studied in Sevilla for a semester and one of my friends had a friend from her school who was living there as an English teacher. Right now we\'re both in the middle of finals, but after the new year (I\'m going to Spain the last day of finals, actually), I\'ll ask her about her friend\'s experiences getting a job in Sevilla for you. Don\'t know about small cities, but my ultimate dream is to teach in a village or smaller city in either Galicia or Cantabria because I love the sea, but I\'m heading out to Madrid first because I have some good friends there that I can fall back on. After a year of experience in Madrid, my Gallego and Cantabro friends are going help me in my search in their area so I can move on to my ultimate dream.

Melinda,

Thanks for the  info.  I am grateful for any feedback you (and your friend) can supply.  I am hoping to go to Spain (Sevilla) in February 2003...I am crossing all my fingers to find work in that beautiful town.  Have a wonderful time on your upcoming trip to Spain, and I know you will soon get to Gallego!

Best,

Hey Jenny-

My brother lives in Seville and worked for several years as an ESL teacher there.  He tells me that there are lots of teaching positions, especially in mid-January when there school semester starts back up.  His advice is that you do not need any certification to teach. That the schools there are more interested in finding somone who is dependable and can make learning english interesting.

I\'m actually going to Seville mid-January 2003 with hopes of staying there until the summer.

Jamie,

You can\'t imagine how happy I am to read your message.  What great news, thanks for responding.  What does your brother do during the summer months?  I have about $4,000.00 saved, which really isn\'t a whole lot of money if I I can\'t work at all during the summer months.  Plus I would  like to keep a little in savings for cushion.  l I\'m  willing to do anything- house cleaning, nannie, bar/cafe work-- anything to remain living in Spain relatively comfortable.  Also great news about the certificate, as I am going back and forth on that one as well.

Thanks again for your help,

Jenny[addsig]

My brother is kina an exception because he holds an EU passport and has started a small company.  He recently mentioned a few other things about Seville:  there are a couple thousand Americans living there (Seville is about 500,000 people) which means that there are English speakers there,  that Bruce Springsteen recently played a concert in Seille which sold out very quickly,  $500 a month is his reccommended minimum, and that the Holy Week fire-parades are outa-this world and not to be missed!

I think that $4,000 is plenty-oh-money, girl!  I don\'t have that much saved up. Go for it!!!

that sound great.

i´m in granada at the moment and not really having alot of luck finding work. i came over here with caca-all money aswell, around 1500 us dollars....arrived in bilbao on the 18th december and still alive! christmas and new years was great but you can imagine the pressure it put on my bank account. crikey! i´m surprised i still got money at all......think its mainly due to good friends over here in various locations.

i really would like to get work in a smaller town too, but i tell you it aint easy. madrid and barca probaly a safe bet, and i know people there.....but thats not the point of coming to live in spain for me.

any further advice on this topic would be much appreciated. might drop through sevilla in a few days....if your around why not meet up.

Hey Jenny,

What\'s your latest--have you left for Sevilla yet wiht that $4,000 bank account? (That\'s plenty to get you started!!)

My husband is from Sevilla (I met him while studying there in 98) and we are living here in the US for now but plan on relocating to Sevilla sometime soon. (in a few years or so...)

I have no idea what I want to do for work when we get there, but like you, are open to do anything that gets me by! I figure that my husband will be the main breadwinner. Right now, I work in Human Resources for a food manufacturing company.

Jay, I was interested to hear about your brother\'s advice/information. What kind of company does he have? Does he hold an EU passport by marriage or birth? Does he need an HR professional on his staff? [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"] What abour your latest, have you moved to Sevilla yet?

Anyway, I say that we all get a little "Help Me Find A Job So I Can Live in Sevilla" support group together...the best way to make things happen is with the help of others!

¡Saludos y mucha suerte a todos con tus sueños!

Hola todos,

I spent last summer in Sevilla on a study abroad program.  I really want to return this summer.  I was wondering if anyone knew of any short-term jobs, maybe teaching english or working at a bar.

Also, if anyone knows about short term apartments, or a cheap place to live over the summer i would greatly appreciate it!

Jenny,

What\'s the latest on finding a job in Seville??

I\'m in Valladolid right now teaching English through the university here while finishing my Masters degree in Spanish.  I\'m interested in moving to Seville after I finish (probably in September).  I\'m of the opinion that the best way to go back (and get around the Spanish beaurocratic red tape) would be to find accomodation with a family while teaching that family English.  Does anyone out there have any ideas on this??

As I am a U.S. citizen, I know it will be tough, but I lived in Seville 6 years ago and I too fell in love with that city and can\'t wait to go back. The main reason I came back to Spain was to be closer to Seville.

Please fill me in on what you\'ve found so far.

Thanks,

Jami[addsig]

Oh my Gosh!  Hello to everyone who has responded to this message/email link!

This is the best sight for networking, without a doubt. I was so incredibly happy to see how many people responded with such great advice, enthusiasm and encouragement!

Well, update =

I have not yet made it to Sevilla, I am still saving $$ so I will be all set when I come home from Spain (who knows when that will be, but I will be living in San Francisco which can be quite costly w/o a job.)  My new target date is August 1st, which will give me time to get situated/relax and time to hit the streets to find a job ( a teaching job, that is.)  I am assuming schools/academies start in late August, early September so I will be there at a good time.

Jami, come September maybe we could meet up and job hunt together.  I wasn\'t planning on living with a family in exchange for English classes but I\'m not totally against it either...tell me if you get any more info on this. Basically, I\'ll do anything to stay in that great city.  And to anyone else who may be there in August, I would be more than happy to hook up and chat.  I will keep checking this site as time passes by here in the states..I\'m just counting down the days till I go!

It\'s so funny, even though I know it\'s in my heart, sometimes I get really freaked out about picking up and moving away to Spain....then I log on and read this site and get excited all over again! Thanks!!!

Suerte!

Good luck!! I just bought my plane ticket and  I almost cried when I realized I\'m really going to do it (or have a hell of a long vacation since my "return" is in September). On June 3 I\'ll be landing in Barcelona and going to Lloret de Mar!

If you need any help getting around Sevilla or reccomendations on where to go, feel free to e-mail me - I studied there for awhile and know it pretty well. I\'m definitely going to pop down there at some point (when I get the money for a plane ticket to at least Madrid) to visit friends so if we\'re still in touch maybe we can get together [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif\"]

Hey there,

Just spied your message and I think I too, might have to pick your brains about where\'s good to go in Seville! I am from London and am moving out there in late August.  I dont know a soul and have only visited once but absolutely fell in love with the place! All these messages are so encouraging and it would be wicked to hear from anyone that may be around there in late summer. Also, any advice that people may have about teaching English would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Melinda,

Maybe you can help me with this. I too just bought my ticket today but set the return date for Dec. 20th. Well, i\'m arriving in Madrid on June 5 and since I don\'t have a visa of any type, i\'m really worried about getting hassled at Spanish customs. Basically, I was planning on doing the 90 day retreat thing but in today\'s climate, I\'m worried that they might think I\'m suspicious if I have a 90-day tourist visa but my ticket says I\'ll be there for 6 months. I plan on telling them that I\'m travelling all over Europe or something along those lines, which I will do for legality reasons, but i do plan on trying to find a job once I finish my CELTA course. Actually, this question is open to anybody and everybody. What should i do about this? Apply for a language program and get a student visa or just fly there and hope they don\'t hassle me about my 3-month departure plan?

Does this make sense? I\'m at work and watching the war on CNN and can\'t help being distracted. But that\'s another headache entirely.

Thanks for any advice that anybody can provide...[addsig]

To be on the safe side, I would buy a train ticket to a non EU country like Andorra or the CR.

I\'m just hoping France is as lax with their entering policies as they were when I went over Christmas. They didn\'t even ask to see my passport! Going or returning...

But I would definitely buy some kind of train ticket indicating that you\'re leaving the EU within 3 months, even if you don\'t use it.

Hi everyone.  I\'ve been on this website before but this is my first post.  I would like to move to Seville and am seeking any and all advice/information.

I\'m a 27-year-old who speaks English and Spanish (although my Spanish is rusty - nothing a little foreign living can\'t fix).  I\'ve never been to Seville, only Barcelona, but something tells me it\'s more up my alley.  Essentially I want a good-size city with plenty to do and some academic, Old World charm.

Is it true that I don\'t need a teacher\'s certificate to teach English?  Also, what other types of jobs do Yankees get in Seville?  I am not incredibly picky, my main motive is to live and work there and have some time and money to travel Europe a bit as well.

I\'ve read some of these posts.  One in particular says that $4,000 US is plenty to get started there...is this the consensus?  I would love any help anyone can give - I\'m a rookie right now.

Hi Jenny,

Did you make it to Sevilla yet? I\'m moving out there in August to teach English, so if your there and you fancy meeting up with a random stranger that you met on the internet than send me an email!! [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_nod.gif\"] I know it can be pretty daunting going it alone, so it will be great to meet up with someone in a similar position. my email is [!-- BBcode auto-mailto start --][a href=\"mailto:katemerrick_2000@yahoo.com\"]katemerrick_2000@yahoo.com[/a][!-- BBCode auto-mailto end --]

The fact that your is an exception brings up a good point:  is it possible to get an EU passport?  I want to be in Spain long term if I can find a way.  I am leery because a lot of jobs say that an EU passport is necessary.  I was wondering how he got one...[addsig]

Are you a citizen or a dual citizen of any European Union country? If so, yes, it\'s possible. I think if you\'re Irish or Italian and you can prove that your grandparents are citizens it\'s possible to apply for dual citizenship as well. Of course my GREAT grandmother was Irish so I\'m outta luck [IMG SRC=\"modules/phpBB_14/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif\"]

Hello everyone, if you're still using this link - some time has passed since the last message...
I'm thinking about moving to Seville in November and wondered if anyone could help.
I have a CELTA and a couple of years experience, but only speak a little Spanish.  How easy will it be for me to find teaching work out there at that time of year?  I will have about a thousand pounds saved, will I be able to survive on this and find a job there?
Hope you can help.
Andy.

Hi Fellow Ex-pats,
I´ve been  living and teaching English in Spain for over two years now and just now stumbled upon this forum.  I worked as an English teacher in Barcelona for the last two years and have just recently relocated to Sevilla and found a job here. As an American, I haven´t had any problems getting work in English academies, but I can´t imagine being able to do it without a TEFL certificate because of all the competition.  Knowing Spanish isn´t that important to employers at most English schools.

Andy- you shouldn´t have any problem getting a job, although finding full time (anywhere from 17-26 hrs/wk) teaching hours in November will be tough. The best times of year to find work tend to be September/early October or in January. Give it a try and you can always supplement it by posting signs for private classes, babysitting or bar work if you´ve got an EU passport.  If you start work right away, 1,000 pounds should be fine, but know that English academies pay at the end of the month, so you might not be seeing a paycheck until the end of November or even December.  Good luck!

Andrea

Hi all!  I just wanted to join this discussion because I too am looking to move to Sevilla in January. I studied at the Univ. of Sevilla over the summer and just feel in love with it. I'm presently teaching English as a Second Language in the states, with the hope it will help me get a job teaching ESL in Spain. I am perfectly willing to get my certficate in TEFL, but all I hear is that iit s nearly impossible for Americans to get a work visa. Terribly discouraging. For those of you who are working around that, such as Jamie's brother and others, could you please let me know whom you are working for and how you managed it?  Also, has anyone gone to Spain and worked for hotels, bars, etc. and found that worthwhile?

We should continue to keep this thread going, for all of us that our headed in the same direction. It could be a big help.

Thanks,

Jennifer

P.S. Andrea, do you have any Americans teaching in your school? And if so, do you know if they do or do not have visas?
