hey everyone,  I just found this site that offers assistance with the beuraucracy of starting your own business in Spain.  Telmo I didn't know where to post this link....so I'm putting it here....Spanish Town Guides.  I myself just submitted an inquiry to them and am awaiting a response.  I don't know what their fees are like but I'll keep you posted and tell you what they do and how much it costs.

Salud!

OK. here is the deal.  I lived in Salamanca for 6 months, I studied there and worked as a DJ in a nightclub.  I loved it.  I want to open up a club/bar/cafe type business there.  I was wondering exactly how I'm going to do this.  I graduate from college this year.  I plan on waiting 5 years, then doing it.  I have one partner so far.  Our budget is $200,000.  We'll have that much saved in 5 years.  Any tips??? Thanks.

Hey Bob, Sounds like a great plan.  have you done your business plan yet?  I'm currently working on that one myself :).  It's no easy task, I can tell you that. It's good that you\'re planning it out with operating capital.  I still haven't heard from the people at Spanish Town Guides, but it sounds like you might be further along in the process.  I would suggest contacting an attorney (one experienced in international law) who can help you with the beurocratic policies and paperwork etc.  This site has great information to get you started.  I just did a google search first for Spanish law.  Then I went to ask.com and did a search on Spanish laws and immigration.  Since I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, I really don't know any more than that.  However, I will be moving to Spain before you (September 2003) so if you want we can keep in touch and I'll keep you posted as I go through the process.  You can e-mail me at mlwalton13@hotmail.com Buena suerte!

Salud!

hey everybody, I received a response from the consulting firm and so I thought I'd go ahead and post it here.  So this was their advice for starting a business in Spain as a Non-EU National....

Quote
Dear Walton

Your idea seems very interesting. In Spain at the moment there is a

great demand for qualified English schools after one of biggest chains

(Opening) had to close because of economical problems (or rather bad

management – it wasn’t because of lack of students).

The first and major problem you have to solve is to get the necessary

permissions as a none EU citizens to set up a business in Spain. There

are a lot of factors that will have influence in this decision like the

size of your investment, how necessary your company is for the Spanish

public, number of Spanish employees expected, uniqueness of business

ides etc. You will most likely need a lawyer in Spain at a later stage

to help you with the Spanish bureaucratic system and we will be happy

to represent you. At first in any case I will recommend you to contact

the Spanish embassy in your home country as they can help you with the

initial steps and provide you with the necessary application forms.

Another important point initially is to do a thorough market research

and to create a business plan before you start to spend a lot of

resources in setting up the company.

In UniSpain we can make this type of basic analysis for only 200€. Our

market research reports includes information about the number of

competitors in different areas of Barcelona and nationwide competitors,

analysis of the client situation, the cost of setting up the business

in different areas and a study of the cash flow and profit and loss

that you will likely incur starting a business like this.

If you get necessary permissions and decide to move on with the project

you will have to start looking for an appropriate location and to set

up a legal unit in Spain. In UniSpain we can provide you with legal and

practical assistance and with help finding the right property and

setting up a company.

To help you find the right property we can offer our free services like

a list of properties available and assistance with planning your tour

and arranging for visiting a requested number of properties.

If you are interested in further information about how UniSpain can

help you or have any questions about the next steps to take don’t

hesitate to contact us again.

We look forward to help you to set up your business in Spain.

Kind regards,

Hope this helps...  :)

This information is great.  I too am looking to open up a bar in Spain.  I have one partner who has a Spanish passport so I think that may be half the battle.  I don't plan on opening up a large establishment, aka club/bar because that is too time consuming.  We plan on opening up a wam bam type of establishment operating on two things, least overhead and most revenue.  We feel this can be done by opening up an outdoor type of bar.  Does anyone know if there are certain liquor laws? such as bldg. and alcohol permits?
