Bank Account Without A Nie
« on: November 27, 2006, 01:43:19 PM »
Hello, I haven´t written in awhile but I´m hoping that NA Language assistants are still reading this forum once in awhile. Does anyone know which Spanish banks will allow you to open an account without a NIE and with just a passport. I have a NIE of course and have my account up and running, but am asking because my boyfriend needs to get an account going without all of the official documentation.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Melodie

Hi Melodie,

I know the banking laws are chaning in Spain and that some banks are beginning to tighten up their regulations.

I have heard that in the past La Caixa would open accounts with just a passport. I don't know how true that is anymore, but you could try them and then let us know here!

Good luck!
Rebecca

Rebecca,

La Caixa has tightened up also.  It's rumored that if you go to Calle Arenal, 24 (Metros SOL y OPERA)  that they will open up an acount without the necessary paperwork, but that's just hearsay, so I can neither confirm nor deny that it's true.  People will have to find out for themselves.

Don't know about the current situation but in 2003 I opened an account in Mijas near Malaga with just a passport. Months later I realised that they were charging me 4 euro a month for having the account.   :(  By this stage I'd got the NIE so went to my local Valencian branch only to be told that I could only change the account in the actual branch where I'd opened it! I asked if they seriously meant that I'd have to make the 20 hour round trip to Mijas and they told me that I could close the account there and reopen but I'd need compulsory insurance of 6 euro a month for at least 3 months.   With that I just closed the account.

It all depends on the bank and the person that is helping you.

Good luck,

Well, it seems like SOL is the place for opening a bank acount without a visa in Madrid, but it still depends on the person and the day.  From what I understand, at one point La Caixa in Sol stopped doing this for a while, but they are doing it again.

Here's an interesting article I found on the subject:

Interesting article.  [_[  It still depends on the bank branch and who serves you.  As I said before, I went to one branch of La Caixa and opened my account with just with a passport. I had some friends try to do the same, but at a different branch, and they were told that they needed more than just a passport to open an account.  They were told that they had to get a standard non-resident certificate.

I'm getting the feeling here, some metaphysial sensation, that it just may depend on the branch that serves you. ;-)

Now you got it Sticky.  I am not denying what the article states, but many people have had many different experiences with Spanish banks when it comes to opening an account.  I was lucky and just opened it with my passport, like you did.  Some tightening up happened after March 11th with everything.  For example, I opened my Vodafone account with just my passport.  But now, those days are long gone.

Okay,

Well actually I am thinking about closing my bank account and opening another... BBVA can charge up to 3 euros for taking out cash at another bank's cash machine.

So I guess when you figure out WHERE you can open account, the next thing is to figure out who offers the best services....

For example, my buddy just opened a non-resident account at the Deutsche Bank (http://grupo.deutsche-bank.es/main3.htm)  in Madrid with no problems and they even gave him a radio or something for opening account. He says he pays NO commissions from any cash machine in Madrid and can easily make international transfers online.

I will be heading over there this week....

Wow, I didn't know that fees could be that high.   :o

Good luck with your research and if you switch to Deutsche Bank, I hope that it works out for you in the end.
