Hi everyone, (I've posted this twice...sorry I wasnt sure where to post it...)
I'm not sure if this is anyone can help me out with this...but I am moving to spain under a student visa. Since I am legally able to work part time, I am trying to get my tax forms in order so I can freelance (graphic design) while I am in Barcelona. I am curious if anyone knows how the US Residency certification (Form 8802) works? I am filling out a request for the certification before I move abroad, so I can be exempt from Spanish taxes, and work legally...I'm a little confused on the process and how it works....
As far as I can tell, I have to apply for the certification for the year prior to the year I will be using it...so I will apply for a US certification for 2005 to use this year 2006. So will I need to apply for another one for use coming this Jan 2007? And once I have my certification, do I just present it to prospective employees? Does this exempt me from paying Spanish taxes, since I will be paying US taxes for the money I make while abroad?
Please let me know if I am mislead, or if there is a better way of handling this.
Thanks!
Nancy
