Learning the language is a fun challenge!

You could take specialized classes, or do what I did: a language exchange!

A few of my private students were English teachers, so I offered one weekly English conversation for Spanish conversation! This worked really well as we didn't just sit and talk, usually we went shopping in Gypsy markets or out for cafelitos- so we were surrounded with things to talk about, not hard for two girls anyway!!!

Of course I had a base to work off of, if you have never studied before then you should definitely go take a couple of classes then set up an exchange to practise what you have learned.

Link words is a good idea, but once you have learned their system, why pay the money for something you can do yourself. In fact, if you create your own links they are more likely to stick. Some of mine are quite rude, and I couldn't share them with anyone, but I never forgot them.
Link words don't have to be words. Sort sentences will do. i.e. A menace R will threaten you = amenazar - to threaten. Visuals: Hanging tubes of toothpaste = colgar - to hang. A ladder sloping against a wall = ladera(n) - slope, or even ladear(v) - to slope
Say the spanish word out loud and see if it reminds you of a phrase in your native language or conjures up a visual.
Those who use this system say that after the sixth or seventh time of using the word the link disappears, but the word remains. So what did you pay all that mone for??
Anyone else have their favourites??

This is a great cultural exchange.  Teaching Spanish in exchange for teaching English.  Not only do you get to learn the language you want but you get closer with someone from a different culture.  Which, in the end I guess is the point of learning the language.  I agree that you must find creative ways to learn.
