hey everyone,
i just wanted to confirm that it is a student visa we are supposed to be getting and not a work one, right? I know lots of people have mentioned that on here, but I have yet to see that detail on anything I've been sent so I just wanted to make sure one more time..

Cepee,
If you do go to the Houston Consulate would you ask them how recent the doctors note/police record have to be (in the last 3 months? in the last 30 days?) And also, whether or not the police record has to have the apostille? That would very helpful. Thanks!

I hope everyone is hanging in there!

We all have to apply for the \"Student Visa\".  It is a dissapointment that they aren't allowing us to apply for a \"Work Visa\" since many of us had hopes of additional jobs.

Finally!! Got my letter in the mail and I'm going to Cordoba!! What a relief.  I guess they didnt send all the Andalucia participants' letters on June 26th cause mine was post marked July 7th. Good timing though because the Embassy was already on my to do list for tomorrow.

So excited!!!

Actually got an email from \"el jefe\" at my primary school today in Fuensalida(Toledo).  It's very exciting.  I'm taking the letter I got in the mail yesterday down to the consulate with a bunch of other documents that I think will do the trick.  There's two things I'm not sure about though.

That Hague stamp thing for the criminal record check is done at the consulate right?

Also, how do I go about showing proof of insurance.  That seems to be one of the requirements for the student visa.

I guess I'll find all this out tomorrow.  Maybe a Spain expert or two here already knows?

As far as I know, in regards to the insurance thing.....I think that the program is giving us medical insurance. I haven't reread the letter that they sent me for the visa lately....but I think it says, along with the wage and details of the program that they will be giving us insurance.

I called the consulate in LA today and surprisingly they told me that I did not need to make an appointment to apply for my visa. They said it's open 8-12 monday through friday and it's first come first serve....does this sound like anything anyone else has heard??? I am just nervous to fly all the way there and have them tell me I did need an appointment!!!!

Hola!
The insurance is provided by the program and it is stated in the letter you receive. That is what people who got it said...

Howdy all, \

I was curious as to how many people on here were put on the waiting list (like myself)?  I havent heard too many people mention it. I have to admit I am a little bummed out by the whole process. From what Ive heard it sounds like the embassy began accepting applicants before the deadline which means those who sent them in later had fewer spots available. I guess this is something to keep in mind for those who would like to participate next year.

Of course it is always possible that some people wont be able to go for whatever reason, so I still have my fingers crossed. Anybody else in my position? Also, for those of you going...what kind of teaching experience do you already have?

Thank a lot and good luck to everybody working on their visas

Joe

joe -

your question has been something i've wondered about too... the first deadline to apply was march 31st, then they kept extending it even though they said they had people on the waiting list.  i have no idea why, doesn't make much sense, does it?  and to reassure you, i tutored college students one-on-one while i was in college but i have no experience in front of a classroom.  one thing that may have been to my advantage (but this is only a theory of mine) is that i've studied in spain before.  anyways, i do hope you get assigned somewhere because i'm sure most applicants would do a fine job.

buena suerte!

Ok news from the Houston Consulate. I had to wait a while but they were very nice.

1) They said that all documents (medical/police) have to be  dated within the last 3 months. I asked if she was sure, because all my documents were dated April 10th and hit the 3 month mark last week, and she said that I would have to get updated documents. :(

2) So regarding the police record, she said that if you are a US citizen that the apostille is not necessary.

3) She said that it will take about 4 weeks.

Hope that helps you guys applying in Houston.

WOW---- is so different in the Houston consulate than in LA. I spoke to someone in LA and she told me that it was ok that my documents were over 3 months old but that I WOULD need an apostille on my police clearance.
Pretty much the opposite of what you were told Cepee! Oh well i guess as long as each of us knows what we need to obtain that elusive visa..

That is strange to have such different standards.  I think I might call the consulate on Monday to see if I get a different answer from a different person and will probably ask why other Consulate offices have different requirements. That makes me uneasy.

just to add to the confusion :P ...

i had my doctor's letter dated march 17th, but i explained to the chicago consulate in an email that i am currently uninsured and asked them to consider the letter anyway since it was just barely over 3 months old (at the time i wrote them) and they were cool with it.

maybe it wouldn't hurt to ask?

To answer previous questions, I live in Arizona (therefore I have to go to the L.A Consulate) and spoke to the Secretary of State, and they recommend that your police records have an Apostle stamp on all three documents (better to be safe than sorry). You will need three copies of the Visa application, three police record copies all of which have to be notarized and with an Apostle stamp. Those of you who are going to the L.A consulate, no appointments are needed according the L.A. consulate guy I spoke with; first come first serve Monday through Friday 8am-12pm. Theirs phone number is 323-938-0166. In addition, some of the letters sent out to us confirming our school and city do not mention anything about medical insurance coverage. So those of you who are in the same position, I'm just as clueless as you are. I don't know if these letters are sufficient enough so that we can apply for visa, or if we have to wait for more information by mail. Best of luck to all, chao.

I forgot to mention that in my \"package\" I got information about the orientation and wanted to see if others in the Andalucia region got the same info. Per this letter it states that we have a reservation at the \"Hotel Luna\" in Granada for the night of October 3rd, dinner is included, and that orientation is on October 4th from 9am to 5 pm. It also states that school starts the next day October 5th (for me in Cordoba, but I assume for everyone in Andalucia). So I guess after orientation all of us who are not placed in Granada will have to take a bus/train back to our new homes. Thats gonna be a long day!

Did others get this info?

Hi Cepee,
Yeah, I got the same information.  It is kind of bad planning to have us go to this  orientation and start school the very next day since, as you mentioned, we are not all in the Granada area.  Sevilla to Granada I think is at least 3 hours, but it's been a while since I've made the trip so I don't remember exactly.  The other thing I was wondering is if they paid for our hotel rooms as single occupancy or double (ie roommates).  I am planning on going with my husband, so I guess I should find that out.  I think that we might spend a day or two before the orientation in Granada, since we have to go all the way there.  Oh well, I am just happy that I got placed in Sevilla and am looking forward to getting over there.

Joe,

I have been put on the waitlist too. I, like you, am saddened because I was really hoping to be accepted into the program. I lived and studied in Valencia last year and I do have some teaching experience. I suppose I was not accepted because I sent in all my paperwork and application just a few days before the deadline. Its unfortunate that those of us who applied later did not have a chance for an opening, but I am happy for those who did get accepted. I am still keeping my fingers crossed for an opening.

Hi - I am also going to Andalucia and will get my visa from the SF consulate also.  Do you know the fastest way to get the Apostille? Have you gone to the Sacramento office? I am going to have less than the stated minimun 60 days to get my visa since I am going out of the country until Aug 9th. Not sure if I am going to get eveything processed in time. What was the issue you had with the notarized copies? Will appreciate any help!
Caroline

Hi Caroline-

I am actually going to Móstoles but regardless, our visa requirements are the same at the SF Consulate.  I did end up going to the Sacramento Office only because given my situation it was more convenient.

This is my understanding of the procedures.  Once you have the Sheriff's letter you must have it notarized by a notary public stating that you certify that it is the original copy.  You must have the notary public provide a \"Jurat with affiant statement\" and then you write in by hand (I made up the statement but it worked just fine) \"I certify that this document is the original copy presented to me by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and that it has not been altered in any way\"

You are able to get the Apostille at the San Francisco Secretary of State office if you first have the notary public's signature verified by the County Clerks Office from the county in which you reside.  Otherwise you must go to the Sacramento Secretary of State office, which has on record all notary public's signatures for the state of California.

Now it seems simple to me, but it was really a complicated process, so please let mek now if you don't understand!

No, I haven't received that initial letter that tells you in which city/school you've been placed.  I'm hoping someone from the Andalucia Consejeria de Educacion returns my e-mail this coming week.

Hey all-

Is there anyone else who was accepted to the program in Castilla-La Mancha that is teaching at I.E.S. Sierra del Segura? I'm just beginning to look into the housing situation in the area and was wondering if other people in that area were looking for roommates.

There is a flight on priceline.com from NYC (JFK) to MAD on Sept 17 at 11:00pm non-stop for $215 ($235 with fees).  I think this will go away quickly.

Other than that, there are ]$400 flights on travelcuts.com and studentuniverse.com from NYC.  I bought one of those because it fits my schedule.  I have family in Manhattan that I'm staying with for a couple of days.  One-ways from Nashville were $900 so I saved $400 by flying to NY for $100 and from NYC to MAD for $400.  Get a one-way out of NY!

On another note.... I've been assigned to Manzanares in Cuidad Real.  Looks small but fun.  It's about 30km from Cuidad Real, and it's a stop on the AVE from Sevilla to Madrid.  I'll be teaching in a secondary school (high schoolers).

So 2 questions:
1. Who else is under the consulate in New Orleans?
2. Who else is in Cuidad Real and/or near Manzanares?

using maps.google.com is the best way to see your city.

I was told I was assigned to the al centro de EOI in the Malaga district. Does anyone know more about that? Anyone else assigned to Antequera 40 minutes north of Malaga?

Hey everyone,

I heard back from Elena Garcia from the Junta de Andalucia.  She told me the following:

Quote
Le informe, que usted estĆ” en reserva. Si se produce algĆŗn cambio se lo comunicaremos.

Then, a couple of hours later, she sent me this:

Quote
Te comunicamos, que la semana que viene (aproximadamente), recibiras notificación nuestra de haber sido seleccionado con plaza.

I'm not quite sure what to make of her e-mails.  Does this mean there was a waiting list (en reserva?) even for those of us who were told we were accepted to the program?  And does the second e-mail mean I'll soon find out if I have a position or does it mean that I do have one and I'll soon be told where?

Confused,
Art

Hi Art,

Well it looked like the first message from her was saying you were on the waiting list, but the second one does say that you have a spot.  Maybe you might want to call that woman and actually speak to her or someone from the program.  It has helped me out quite a bit when dealing with Castilla-La Mancha.

Good luck.

I replied to her via e-mail, but you're right, I will try calling if I don't hear back soon.  I don't have a contact number for her, but I'm sure I could find a general telephone number on the Junta de AndalucĆa website.  Thanks!

for any east coast people, i wanted to elaborate on laddface's message about the cheap plane tix out of JFK.  i just bought mine on priceline.com for $215 for sept. 18th.  here's the flight info too in case anyone wants to look into it:

Air Plus Comet
Flight 916
7h  25m , 3578mi  From
New York City - John F Kennedy Intl (JFK)
New York City, NY
Departs: 11:10 P.M.  To
Madrid - Barajas (MAD)
Madrid, Spain
Arrives: 12:35 P.M.  (next day)

plus, i read somewhere else about a website: air-hitch.org, where you can buy a voucher for REALLY cheap tickets but you have to wait and see if a seat will be open.  but it's refundable and the voucher is good for a year.  they have flights to europe out of several US cities.  hope this is useful to some of you.  let us know if you try air-hitch.org how it goes.

Hi Mike,

I studied at la Universidad Politecnica de Valencia in Valencia. I started out in Gandia in January and I spent the spring semester of 05 in Valencia. Did you get accepted? I hope so! Someone has to represent Valencia!! Well luckily I am moving back to VLC in September, so program or not, I am going back! The best of luck to you, Mike!

Hey Hillary.

I got accepted to Sevilla. I will fully represent VLC. Glad you'll be back there. I am actually a citizen of Ireland so I don't need to worry about the whole visa thing. Valencia is my favorite city in all the world and I plan to be back there teaching, or doing something else, after the Sevilla school year. I studied in a small language institute there. I wish I went to the politecnica. Either way I will be back in Valencia for Fallas, like always. All my friends are there. They're like family. Can't wait to go back. Benimaclet pa'100pre haha.

For those of you still looking for a cheap plane ticket, I HIGHLY recommend flycheapabroad.com. I bought a ticket from Tucson, AZ to Madrid for only $364. They give you better rates over the phone, call them at 1-800-421-7689. Good luck to all.

I have a question for the people in Madrid or Andalucia or any other group that has received the entire packet.  I'm in the Castilla La Mancha group.  We have only received a single sheet of paper that tells us our assignment and the amount of money we will receive while there.

The requirements for the student visa request:

1. A letter of admission as a full-time student in Spain including name, address, registration number of the school with the Spanish Department of Education as well as full tuition payment and duration of the program.

2. Certification from the Spanish University .... commonly the \"Letter of Acceptance\"

3. International health insurance.

I'm thinking that 1 and 2 is covered in the letter that I received, although, it isn't really a Spanish University with a registration number and all that fancy stuff.

My question is, Madrid/Andalucia/whoever people, in the packet that you received, were these criteria met?  Especially the health insurance?  I already have personal health insurance.  I wonder if I could send that in instead of waiting for the packet from La Mancha.

I guess getting down to it. I wonder if I can go ahead and apply for my visa with just the paper that La Mancha sent and my personal heath insurance and all that other stuff to apply or keep waiting for things from La Mancha.  ??

I'm sorry this post is so long.  Thank you for reading this, and please let me know what you know so far.

Thanks again.

congrats on your acceptance!  i'm working at a ceip in villalbilla, but will be living in alcala de henares (hopefully) because the transportation between villalbilla and madrid is lousy. i'm sure there are other auxiliares assigned to other schools in alcala though too.

In my packet, I got a lengthy letter detailing my job, my salary, and when my health insurance would begin and end (among several other documents).  But if the insurance you already have will be able to cover you while you're in Spain, then you could probably just use that.  But check with the consulate because I don't want to give you bad advice.

hey I looked at the air-hitch.org website, and my brain began to hurt.     Does anyone else know of any places to find cheap flights from Minneapolis or Chicago?  The cheapest I can find it about 750.00 USD.  Thanks in advance!

John,

The best flight I found out of Minneapolis was $599 on hobbittravel.com. Check it out- It's not cheap but it's better than $750!

Good luck!

Bammers,
Ive been trying to figure out the same thing.  Ive been told 4 weeks, 45 days, 60 days...every consulate is different and every time I call or look online theres a different answer.  So Id say plan somewhere between 4 to 8 weeks, but you can try to get in touch with your consulate and see if theyll give you more specifics.

Hey everyone!  Im new on this thing, but have a few questions if anyone can help me...

First of all, Im in Europe at the moment and Im flying back to the states just to apply for my visa.  My permanent address is in Idaho so I have to apply in San Francisco.  But online the consulate has weird requirements...you have to in a return plane ticket...USA-Madrid-USA and you cant apply if its less than 60 days from your departure date even though it only takes 45 days to process the visa.  Has anyone applied in San Francisco yet?  Do they actually follow this?  I cant get anyone to answer my questions over the phone or via email and Im having a hard time because Im overseas.  I dont know what else to do.  I dont even know when the position ends so I have no idea about when exactly Im returning to the USA.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks!
-Natalie

P.S.  Im gonna be in Madrid in the Huertas area...anyone around there looking for a roomie?

Natalie-

I assume that the program runs for everyone until May 31st.  Thats how long it runs for in Extremadura.  Have a good day!

Hi.  What is the \"apostille of the hague\" and what do you mean by the fact that they wouldnt verify a notarys signature?  Is having the police documents notarized enough or is there something else I need to do?  I have to apply in SF and Im flying there only for the day to take care of the visa, so I wanna make sure I have all the paperwork!  Thanks!
-Natalie

Natalie-  the following is from a post that I made on pg. 19, read carefully:

You must have the Sheriff's letter notarized stating that you certify that it is the original copy. You must have the notary public provide a \"Jurat with affiant statement\" and then you write in by hand (I made up the statement but it worked just fine) \"I certify that this document is the original copy presented to me by the Your County Name Sheriff's Office and that it has not been altered in any way\"

You are able to get the Apostille at the San Francisco Secretary of State office if you first have the notary public's signature verified by the County Clerks Office from the county from which the notary public's stamp was issued. Otherwise you must go to the Sacramento Secretary of State office, which has on record all notary public's signatures for the state of California.

Be sure to do this before you visit the SF Consulate otherwise they will have you mail it in separately.  I have read that other consulates do not require the Apostille, but if you're going to SF, take care of it beforehand to save yourself the troubles later!

Also, I received the following e-mail from Javier de Higes at the Education Office in DC.  You may want to contact him...it might save you the trip to SF.  I am not sure if this would qualify for you, and I did not pay too close attention since I've already applied for my visa.  Hope this all helps!

I've been assigned to a school in Madrid and my job does not end until June 30th.  It would be safer to assume that the length of the contract may vary from region to region or even school to school.

Hi!

More questions about getting the police reports notarized - if I have three original copies with a seal would they need to be notarized? I had never heard that notarized signatures needed to be verified as well. Was that in the directions or did someone tell you that? Did you get the email from the Embassy about sending the visa application into LA instead of SF?

Hi Caroline-

Regarding your e-mail:  You have three original copies of the police clearance?  What seal are you talking about...from the county?  In order to get the Apostille of the Hague you need to have the Police Clearance notarized.  Then you must take it to your County Clerk's office to have the notary public's signature verified.  If you choose to go to Sacramento you can avoid going to the County Clerks office as the Sacramento Secretary of State has on file all of the signatures for the state of California.  That is the process that I was told to follow from someone at the Secretary of State's Office.

I received the e-mail from Javier de Higes.  His information is listed on the previous post.  You may want to contact him.

This could be a problem, because Im from Idaho, so all my stuff if notarized there.  Ill call my Dad and see if he can find out anything more about how to do that there.  Thanks for the info!
