Castellon?

Folks!  West Virginia boy seeks advice on where to begin a job search.  Highly experienced.  Trying to decide what might work out north of Portugal or somewhere near Valencia.  Is the Catalunya market really swamped with teachers?  In search or mountains but not sunshine...  chaunceyforgood B)

If you are looking to be in or near the mountains, in Catalunya check out Terrassa, Sabadell, Vic, and Girona. I've known people to get work in Andorra, too. Smaller places like this are often neglected by English teachers looking for work, so there may be schools there keen to have native speaking teachers but that have difficulty finding them.

Also, check out the education / teaching (profesores / formación) ads on the various city versions of LoQuo http://www.loquo.com/english for an idea of what the job markets are like in the various cities and towns LoQuo has local versions for. These cities are:

Barcelona
Alicante
Almeria
Badajoz
Bilbao
Cadiz
Cordoba
Girona
Granada
A Coruña
Madrid
Majorca
Murcia
Malaga
Oviedo - Gijon
Pontevedra
Salamanca
San Sebastian
Santander
Seville
Tarragona
Tenerife
Toledo
Valencia
Valladolid
Zaragoza

However, some jobs are only advertised locally or are not advertised at all jobs, with some schools relying on word of mouth or drop-ins. Therefore, a local in-person job hunt may turn up something one couldn't find \"long distance.\" Check out the \"academias de idiomas\" listings in the local Paginas Amarillas (Yellow Pages) and send your CV to all. One more qualifier, however, is that not all academies are listed in the Paginas Amarillas. (In Spain it does not seem that businesses view a listing in the Yellow Pages as necessary, as businesses seem to back in the USA. I am constantly surprised at the major businesses that do not have a listing.) Again, another reason the in-person job hunt is probably best -- see for yourself what schools are there, ask around, etc.

Buena suerte,

Here goes it:  Some questions, relying as ever on the kindness of strangers!

1)  Is there still an IEN Institut Nord-america in Barcelona?  Operating elsewhere in Spain?

2)  Anybody know of a web site listing universities in Spain?  I haven't thus far read of there being any in Galicia?

3)  If Spanish university students are so eager to practice English with native speakers, are there not university courses/departments where one could teach various subjects...NOT grammar?  I taught law last semester in the Czech Republic, with students a bit on the cold side...

4)  How well do universities pay?  Would the Spanish ones help with contracts and paperwork?  I could work towards some arrangement for next September while looking around Iberia in the months ahead...

5)  Balmy in New York last night, I'm wondering whether Galicia is too cold in the winter.  And if there are 19 days of precipitation in a month, would that be mild scattered showers or Seattle-like moisture???

Thanks for any replies and helpful ideas!
